This is another quick practice piece. I'm back from the fencing tournament, and spent most of the plane ride looking out the window, studying the clouds.
So, I had to draw some. :D
The clouds were the quickest part of this piece, by far, but I think they turned out well. I did have to re-draw them a few times to get them right, but I'm glad I did.
The clouds on the bottom use the same method that I used in my last picture. I tried to make the ones on the top more feathery to represent cirrus clouds. The floating town was fun, too. I usually find forests, or natural backgrounds to be a bit easier, so this was a good challenge. I'm especially proud of how that sundial, and the stairs turned out.

I really like how they look like the real thing!
It might be the choice of colors and/or the transition from one color to the other that makes it look so great and realistic! ...I like the composition and the perspective you used is awesome!
I can only dream of coloring like this. ^^

I tried to base the clouds off of some of the clouds I saw on the plane.
As usual, I drew them in grayscale. Adding colors to the sky was a rather quick process. I used a gradient map.
Gradient maps assign colors to the image based on the brightness of what is underneath them. Here's a little tutorial that shows the process. http://www.photoshopessentials.com/.....toshop-sunset/
Of course, I still had to pick the colors, and fiddle with things to get them in the right places, but this was a rather easy way to set up the basic color scheme of the sky.

Yeah, I saw Escaflowne...three thing, why i watched it:
1. 1st episode won me over, where the dragon attack was awesome.
2. Mecha that turns to dragon. Yay.
3. That She-commander, who was all crazy...she sorted out some major destruction. Her dedication for her job was fun to watch.
But floating rocks? If i would get a 100 dollar for the times i saw floating rocks used in anything, i would have more then 1K$ for sure. Have you seen a candle that "burns" with water? I mean the fire is actually water on it?

Now that's not overused...but still strange. I'll buy it, just as the flowing rocks!

Don't you just love picture links, that expires in like 5 seconds?

Links that expire and sites that block hotlinking annoy me.
That water candle is quite interesting. I don't think I've seen anything like it before. Thanks for re-posting that link.
Floating rocks are much more common than things like that. I'll have to try and keep improving, and keep pushing myself to see if I can make some more original backgrounds and objects. The possibilities are endless, after all.
Dilandau was my favorite character in Escaflowne, too.
He (or she?) is one of my all time favorite villains. I have to re-watch that series again some time.

Dilandau...yup that was her name...I think Dilandau was a she. let me check!
Dilandau is unabashedly portrayed as female -- as to whether the anime's Dilandau is male or female, the answer is yes...
That was helpfull. For me Dilandau is a she. (split personality persons are fun...)
Yep i like the watery candle picture. Nothing you see everyday. Glad, that you enjoyed it! Your picture is awesome too, but not because of the flowing rocks, but because that positioning of the sundial...High point so nothing bothers the light, as long as it is there. Nice touch. The clouds are pretty too...

You can download a larger version there. It's 2868x1200, so you can shrink it down to the size you want.
