Lin, The Oni Ref sheet
All relevant information to my OC is on the art itself. The following is important cultural notes about the Kimono/Geisha culture
Though Japan does not exist in my OC's canon, her aesthetic is very closely based on Oiran/Tayuu from their culture, so I think it's important to add some cultural footnotes so I can attempt to not spread misrepresentation
GEISHA ARE NOT COURTESANS. Maiko/Geisha are trained in the arts of music, dance and hospitality. This misconception comes from American soldiers confusing prostitutes with geisha and referring to them as such in America. Lin's outfit design is NOT based on a Geisha. Her hair ornaments are common with Oiran who are actually prostitutes of a high esteem. Another indicator of this is her Obi (sash) being tied in the front. Her sleeve length correlates with her being an unmarried female.
Len is wearing a Haori over his kimono which is more formal. His sleeve length indicates female as a nod to his original gender. Both designs have the kimono front lapels folded the incorrect way since Lin is not alive.
Before drawing a Geisha/Maiko/Oiran/Tayuu consider researching if these elements fit your character! :)
Please let me know if I have researched anything incorrectly, I did my best to check my information cited multiple sources and to remember what i was told in Japanese class
