My name is Doctor Grae Ama. I am an engineer of genetics and mechanics.
I am looking through the letters I exchanged with an old colleague of mine, Doctor Don Badge, after a devastating loss. The first letter I sent in this collection dates back 14 years ago. I had finished my academic studies, and after completing a few final projects in my home country, I sailed out to sea in search of a place to work on my own. I knew which island I was looking for – it had an abandoned laboratory by the shore that I would soon make my own.
14 Years Ago:
Dear Don,
I finally made it home! My new home, anyway. The ocean was especially rough on the way here. It was raining cold during the last few hours I was sailing, and I saw the oddest thing. My boat was sailing among a large pod of lobsters – I was surrounded! I hope I didn’t run any over on the way here, they were not threatening at all.
So yes, I am safe and settled after two weeks that went by way too fast. I hope you are doing well at the university, and I am glad that you wanted to keep in touch digitally! We might not get to take classes together anymore, or even have many chances to be together in person from this point on, but I am thankful that you are one of the few I am staying close with. Be sure to update me on your academic adventures, and I will tell you all about my scientific discoveries!
I know that you plan to work as a physician in a few years: there’s plenty of promise in you. If the stress ever gets to be too much, or you feel like visiting, I would happily allow you to stay with me here.
Until next time, my friend!

Dear Don,
Homoerotic!? I was only suggesting if you felt alone or pressured you could visit me. I don’t know what makes that an odd suggestion. Besides, you are the only badger at the whole university – since your species does not usually assimilate with society, it does make you a rare case. I know that may draw unnecessary, stressful attention, that’s why I offered my place to you. It is incredibly admirable that you are becoming your own person and pursuing education like you are, and I don’t want that to interfere with who it is you are trying to become.
Anyway, despite your humorous remarks, I have serious news! The past month I’ve been using my water-net to analyze the genetics of the local sea life. I also had this sneaking suspicion that I was not alone here on this island. There is quite the jungle behind the laboratory here, full of life. However, none of the creatures I’ve seen in it are like us. However, as I finished capturing sample life in the ocean, I saw a wolf!
It was spying on me from the inside of a bush! I was terrified at first, but thinking on it now just makes me laugh. Its ears and snout were sticking straight out of the bush – it did a terrible job of hiding. However, when I saw it I screamed, dropped my net, and ran inside to hide. I can’t believe such a dumb animal scared me.
You know, its nose was almost as big as yours. Be careful, you have competition! Until next time.

I'm not even sure what I want! X3 Sorry. I just looked at some friend's stories, and originally these had 5 spaces between each paragraph, but you can only do those when you submit it as a story, but I wanted to include a bigger image at the top like this. So instead I switched to space between each paragraph. :B No biggie!
Hehe, I didn't include them because Dr. Ama's story is supposed to focus on what happened with him, but I wanted there to be enough playback between the letters for the reader to get the gist of how Don might have responded. (:
I'm also not totally sure how Don writes. X3 Whether he writes like he talks or if it's separate... I'm posting the story before I really revise it, and I won't end up posting the complete thing, but maybe I'll include Don's half of the letters if I like the idea and figure out how he writes. X3
Thanks!

LOL! Letters are a new thing to me, as far as your work - it's fun to see a different approach, and it works really well! And I'm glad we still get pictures in addition! :) The "homoerotic" remarks are funny - plus they show all at once how Don is extremely uncomfortable with sexual matters and with interpersonal relationships, and explains part of how how awkward he is in trying to get along in society. Dr. Ama seems to deal with it very patiently, so it's good Don has him as a friend! It's interesting how you associated the difficulties with his being a badger, which gives a personality not just to Don but to the species. Though it also shows Don as an individual and potentially capable of getting beyond his species-related difficulties - at least for a time and with the encouragement of someone like Dr. Ama. We'll all look forward to more of Don's backstory and more about Dr. Ama and the wolf!
Hooray for the beginning of another series of Nishi works! :D

The first time I started writing this story years and years ago, it was just a normal sorta story. (: But once I got more serious about it, I figured letters and journal entries would be a neater way to do it! Though, I really miss hearing characters talk, and that's part of what you lose when it's all about someone recounting things like this. X3
But hehe, looks like you understand Don's character. X3 It's always good having a patient and understanding friend with you when you're going through weird times! (: So I'm sure they're definitely benefiting from each others' friendship!

Hurray! It's awesome to be getting to know more about the mysterious Dr. Ama. I must say, you did a fantastic job in describing his journey to the island. My mind was quite easily able to visualize the events as they transpired and I got quite the air of mystery and adventure from all of it.
The style you are using is quite fun, too. Thanks to Don Bondage, and other Don encounters, it's quite possible to mentally think of how the now up-and-coming physician might've responded to Dr. Ama.
Creative, fun, and fresh. You never cease to raise the bar when it comes to creative concepts, my friend. *Flutters* Keep up the good work! :)

Hehe, yay! :D I'm glad writin' it out works just as well. X3
And I'm gonna have to think about another comment saying I should include Don's parts too, rather than just focus on Ama's. But I'm glad that at least after reading the other parts you can get an idea about how he responded. (:
Was glad to try something new though! :3 Thanks a bunch!
