So this is one of the original species of a book series I write, Cosmic Driftwood.
Syans, "see-anne", are mustelids, but an unusual species. In appearance (not all of it is able to be clearly captured from this angle and pose) they have a thick tail like an otter, ears not unlike a fox, thick bushy manes, and folds of skin not unlike a flying squirrel suit. Their paws possess the ability to grip rock easily. Fur is typically a light hazel-grey color. Eyes can be grey, brown, hazel, yellow, or black. Like many species, sexual dimorphism causes males to be larger than females.
Like many mustelids, female syans possess a bicornate uterus, which basically is two wombs. A weird feature of syans is that in the first pregnancy, she will always give birth to twins, a male and a female. Also strange is that each womb is gender specific, one will always only carry male offspring, the other female. Gestation lasts between six and a half to eight weeks; this is another unusual feature, as most other species don't typically have such a wide range of labor that produces healthy offspring. The length of gestation is almost entirely dependent upon the litter size. Larger litters of five or six result in six and a half, three to four around seven, and twins to single at about eight.
Culturally, syans tend to have interesting outlooks on the topics of mating and pregnancy. They have no tolerance of anyone whatsoever viewing their mating practices, and will go to such extremes as gouging out eyes or even instant death to violators, depending on the level of violation. That said, it's impossible to accidentally stumble in on them, as they make every effort to be hidden. As such, no outsiders to the species has any idea what they do relative to other species.
Meanwhile, when it comes time to give birth, even extended family and friends are invited to be present; little children of the syans learn all about these sorts of things early on, but while they know full well about their anatomy and reproduction, syans hold the topics on highest reverence, and tolerate little demeaning humor about it despite freely answering any questions on the topic aside from their mating practices.
Yet another odd feature is that syannic pregnancy is biologically wired OCD. Three days exactly before birth, the female knows it's going to happen; the unborn offspring at that 72 hour mark will become extremely active in their movements, at all hours. The excess of movement only ceases one hour before birth, by which point rapid labor either begins or has been already going. The womb half for males historically has always gone first, female second. No reason is yet known. Also, twins of the first labor share a mental and emotional connection stronger than any known in any other species of twins, despite sharing different wombs.
Hope you guys enjoy both the artwork and introductory information :3

I have five of the current 12 manuscripts published on Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing. Three of those feature syans.
Fair warning, I'm in the process of updating the published books, and I don't have a set timeline for when they will be finished. But if you want to check them out now, feel free!
