Her mate has initiated the Gara time branching device.
Reaching into the past, in about seven alternate timelines, they perform in each one the necessary mating to produce offspring. Subconsciously, they have an awareness of their respective counterpart branches of time; minor details are different, but in the end, she becomes pregnant in each one.
In five of the seven branches, she carries twins (depicted here).
In the remaining two, one is single, the other triplets.
Because of the nature of how the device was designed to work, when it aligns each timeline back with the prime, it will keep the labor schedule of the single kit pregnancy. And as is common with pregnancies, females can carry smaller litters just a little bit longer than in larger ones.
The not so pleasant irony is that the pregnancy conceived earliest was the triplets.
And the single pregnancy was actually started a week later.
Average fox gestation is approximately 7 weeks, between 49 to 54 for red foxes (yes, I know the black markings aren't consistent between all three pieces); with the single pregnancy already set to push the upper limit of duration...
She will give birth to 14 cubs. Three of them at 61 days, ten at a week overdue, and one at 54 days.
My math shows that six days of their pregnancies is equivalent to one month for humans.
This depicted branch in timeline thinks her current pregnancy isn't so bad...
