Now this is a painting I would love to know the story of ! I mean, from the models to the painter, it must have been quite an interesting day for pretty much everyone involved in its creation. Like, did the prince just ask the royal portraitist to paint him in the nude snuggling up with his beloved toyboy slave ? We do know that the lion tribe is rather uninhibited when it comes to sexuality, but still. XD

I mean... there are old paintings showing people having sex while a servant is holding a lamp for them. :P

Touché. Still, imagine being asked by one of your king's sons to paint him completely naked while he amorously holds a slave boy between his thighs... That's quite different from someone painting one of their kinky fantasies...

I would assume if you are a court painter at Illeroy's court you wouldn't be there if you weren't ready to handle such situations. :D For me personally it would make no difference. I mean, if I had the money I would totally hire kinky people to pose in sex scenes for me to paint. :P

I imagine it was a very frightening thing for the artist, who would have been told to keep silent about the whole thing or find himself short a head. The actual nude snuggling probably wasn't a big deal since they're pretty openly sexual within the pride/royal house. Still not particularly good form for a prince to be so doting on a single slave.

Yeah, I was actually expecting that the truly problematic part of the request would be the respective social status of the models... At least I hope that the painter got a good eyeful of their prince's naked glory, because this is probably the only form of remuneration that they will receive for their trouble. XD Still, it's kind of heartwarming that A'khyl took such a risk to get his love for Taryn immortalized. Now the question is, how and why did that painting find itself in this random fortress alongside the sword of the deposed king... ? Well, I guess that it will have to wait until after some stealthy bed-breaking. ;3

As for compensation, I'm pretty sure the painter was given a large purse of gold. You see, if you get someone to do your bidding out of fear only, they will be happy to sell you out, not to mention they can't even be held responsible since they were being forced. But if you pay them, it is their best interest to keep their mouth shut because they are now a willing accomplice.

If anything, the part I would have been scared about is to make sure I don't disappoint the prince.

The prince gave you the honor to lay your eyes on the undressed curves of his treasured paramour, and you would dare to ask him for money too !? How rude. :3 No but seriously, you've got a point. Still, disappointing the prince is one thing, but if the king comes to learn that you are an accomplice of his son's politically questionable antics, that's a different story. Despots tend to not exactly be rational people when it comes to dispensing punishments (although now I cannot help but imagine how hilarious it would be if it turned out that Illeroi had his own secret boudoir with a portrait of Ciel and him in the same kind of pose XD ).

Depending on the time period, country, and ruler in question, life at court was often a minefield. Courtiers had to play smart with who are they trying to please, especially when things can shift quickly - your patron that protected your ass and helped treasury money find its way to your pockets may get promoted to a higher office tomorrow, or may get beheaded for treason. And you could easily end up in situations where your choice is merely in whom you want to commit treason with and hope to end up on the winning side later, LOL. Also, if a ruler was deposed by force, well, anyone who was seen as loyal to them could easily end up with their head on a spike.

If you watched Game of Thrones, let me just say that the level of scheming and intrigue in that show is not at all unrealistic. Actually, real life was probably way crazier at times ( minus dragons and magic and whatnot).

There were certain rulers who were infamous even in their own time for throwing around death sentences like candy. Think of Henry VIII, for example.
