CHAPTER 2. THE BEACH
At the hotel reception, I was greeted by two officials. One was a chakat employed by the compound, while the other was an immigration agent foxtaur. After registering and receiving the key to my room, the foxtaur, led me to a small adjoining room, where he went through my papers.
“Mr. Melinao. According to current health regulations, you must remain in quarantine here in Amistad for eight days. You can move freely within the city. But it is strictly forbidden to get out of it. I will put a locator bracelet on you that will warn us if you cross the metropolitan limits. I do not have to remind you that the consequences for you will be severe if you do not follow our rules. At the end of the eight days, an immigration official will remove the bracelet, in this same place.” The foxtaur eloquently and firmly said. Although I knew some specimens of this breed on Earth, it seemed to me that the official had a coat that was brighter and slightly lighter than the typical brown.
“Don't worry, I followed the rules,” I replied cordially. But the foxtaur didn't even flinch. I did not see him smile at any time. After returning my papers, he escorted me back to the reception area, leaving me with the hotel official. This one seemed to be more cordial in the treatment. With a wide smile on his furry face, he led me to the elevators and together we went up to the sixth floor where my room was located.
"Don't worry," he told me as we walked down the hall. "Immigration are always strict with first timers. They are very jealous of their work,” he added.
“It is expected that they are,” I answered. “Preventing the spread of any disease or detecting unwanted people, is an important job, I suppose.”
“In that you are right. By the way my name is Blukast. And I am at your disposal for whatever you need, Mr. Melinao.”
"Oh thank you very much," I replied as I shook hir hand.
“Have a good rest. Tail high!” shi exclaimed as shi retreated down the hall.
"Tail high!" I replied with my raised hand, although it still seemed funny to say it.
The room was standard. It had a nice view of the beach, a spacious bed, and a comfortable bathroom. A typical room for the use of chakats and bipedal beings like me. I arranged my clothes in the closet and decided to take a shower. The water felt very nice and refreshing.
After drying off and as the sun was already setting on the horizon, I decided to go to sleep until tomorrow. I was too tired to do any night activities. But before, I was able to contemplate from my window, how beautiful the Chakona sunset was. I remembered my childhood and those pleasant afternoons of games on the beaches of Valparaíso, facing the Pacific Ocean. A sea of nostalgic memories flooded my mind when I plunged into the rest of the night.
The next day, the sun was already high in the sky when I woke up. It was like 11 in the morning according to local time. I got up quickly, eager to start touring the city. I had eight days to do it, before embarking to the Skunktaur Archipelago. The data Regt had given me would be very useful. I took a quick shower, then put on a sports outfit—shorts, shirt, and my beloved running shoes. I went down to the hotel's casino and, presenting my Dewclaw student ID, was given a hearty breakfast. Fortunately, the costs of mandatory stay in the hotel for quarantine were included in the price of the university course. But once this is done, I should use my own resources to help myself. I had saved up credits for a couple of years to come to Chakona. And according to my calculations, everything should add up. However, I still had something extra, in case of unforeseen events.
After breakfast, I went outside the hotel. Like any urban center, Amistad looked very dynamic, some automatic transports circulating and many people walking, most of them quadrupeds. I also observed several bipedal morphs and—surprisingly to me—very few humans.
I crossed the avenue that separated the hotel from the beach. I put my old music player in my ears and started jogging across the sand, at the edge of the sea. The feeling of the fresh air on my face was delicious. Fortunately at that time, there were not many people on the beach and the space to run was wide. I was jogging back and forth for about 30 minutes, after which I decided to rest. A few meters away, I glimpsed a soft mound of earth covered with fine grass and crowned by a large tree with flat branches, which served as a natural sunshade. I sat at the base, and I began to contemplate the landscape while my body regained its strength. After a while, I took out my pocket tablet and began to take a look at the previous contents that I should know, to successfully take the postgraduate course. From time to time, the gentle sea breeze caressed my face, unintentionally transporting me to Earth. Without realizing it, time passed quickly. And as I finished reading my engineering notes, a deep voice snapped me out of concentration.
"Nice place to contemplate the horizon, don't you think?" Those words startled me. And despite having the headphones in my ears...and the loud volume of the music, it seemed to me that that voice came from inside my head. I turned around quickly but I didn't see anyone around. I took off my headphones and stood up. I looked around and even looked behind the tree. Finding no one, I sat down on the grass again.
“Sorry if I scared you. It is that this place is also my favorite to contemplate the sunsets” said the same voice again, although this time, I could see a quadruped being that was approaching me from the side of the tumulus. I was surprised. Hy was an exemplary skunktaur; the first one I saw in Chakona. Hy had black fur with white stripes on the back and back, typical of this species, a large hairy tail, short legs and a robust body. I noticed that on one side of his chest, hy bore the mark of a red paw. I immediately understood why I had "heard" his voice in my head. I got up from the floor and greeted hym, somewhat nervous.
“Good afternoon sir...I say Shir...”
“Hey, I'm not a chakat. And I am in full male phase. So, "sir" is fine by me.” hy replied with a smile. Before I said anything, hy added in a serious tone, “And you are occupying my favorite place to rest.”
“Excuse me? I thought this was a public place.” I answered astonished.
”Yeah it is. But that does not imply that it stops being my favorite,” hy added. After an awkward silence, I decided to withdraw, as I did not want to have problems with anyone, much less a skunktaur with telepathic abilities.
“Why you are leaving? I have not asked you to do it. I only commented that this is also my favorite place to see the sunsets.” hy said again.
“Then you enjoy it. Have a good afternoon!” I answered hurriedly, while I gathered my things and left the place.
“It's a shame, son. I would have loved to chat with you.” I managed to hear hym say, but I did not respond. As I passed him, I forced a smile, realizing that he was an old skunktaur. I put on the headphones and started jogging again. After another half hour of exercise, I started to feel hungry. So I hurried to the hotel to enjoy lunch. However, before leaving the beach, I looked back and saw how the old skunktaur had climbed the mound and settled next to the tree. It seemed like a strange situation to me. Skunktaurs are known to be very active creatures. Across the Federation, the phrase "if a skunktaur is still for more than five minutes, hy is sick, or is asleep" is known. I assumed that in Dewclaw, I would have to interact with many individuals of this species. Some would be my classmates, and others would surely be my teachers. Be that as it may, the only thing that bothered me were his extrasensory abilities, since things like telepathy, telekinesis or astral projections, were phenomena too alien to my daily reality, and to my work as an engineer.
After crossing the avenue, I entered the hotel's casino again, where there were many dishes prepared for the patrons. Without delay, I grabbed a couple of them and sat down to eat, thinking about what other places in the city I could visit in the remainder of the day and into the night.
