I really do use a bunch of different ways for doing hands. I guess it just depends on the position.
Also, the distance from the base of the wrist to the fingertips is roughly equal to the distance from the chin to the hairline.

I'd guess that could be the reason. It's probably goes to whatever the muscles are most comfortable with. And possibly also the angle your hand is relaxing in. Of course, it could also be a subconscious resistance; according to some hypnotists, people sometimes do the exact opposite of what they're told to do.
Trying to relax, and you end up flexing your muscles to open your palm instead of letting it sit naturally open?
Its only the right hand, so I'm guessing its because that's my trigger finger, as well as it and my thumb are always gripping the flipper on the Rockband guitars.
