There's a Heavier meaning to this scene...
Remember the Chapter Title, [Mortal Dread, Mortal Love]? It represents two things: 1) Gloria being unable to have Kids without Divine Magic, and 2) Alexander's Days being numbered due to being a Target Candidate by the forces of Chaos.
This is basically taking the Original Plot behind Alexander and Gloria, and not only giving a Reason why Alex couldn't be around for Lilly, but also explain why he disappeared in the first place.
It however may also add a Layer of Tragedy... By the Time Lilly goes to look for her Dad, he may already be dead by then...
