The Wuchang is a hell guardian/prefect, who monitor the ghosts let out on Hungry Ghost Festival. They're monstrously ugly with long tongues, armed with a sword-shaped cane and carry ropes or chains to bind resisiting spirits. Some versions carry seals, horsetail brushes or palm frond fans.

They're the first line of reclaimers, anyone they couldn't round up will be left to the merciless Oxhead and Horseface.

The Wuchangs come in two uniform colors, black and white. Black is fiercer, white will allow some understanding, both are fiercely brutal about their jobs.


The white wuchang is a gambler's friend, as he's believed to bestow good luck on anyone who sees him, hence the writing on his tall hat: "Great fortune with one sight". Assuming they don't die from terror first.
