CHAPTER 17 A NEW SUNSET
The next day, we got up early. The weekend began, and in the next few hours, Natany would compete in the Renzar tournament. After breakfast, which this time, I prepared for my “parents” myself, I decided to put on my sports suit and go jogging around the city. Sorah, as a good “mother,” was concerned for my safety. But I told her that I could take good care of myself, and that I was used to doing morning exercises, even when I lived on Earth.
I drew up a route following the path of the urban commuter train. That made me pass near the bar where I met Lorel. Coincidentally, I saw as shi walked hand in hand with Liner and Gret. All three looked happy and I was happy for them. Since they were at the other end of the street, they couldn't see me. It was better this way. Contemplating the happiness of others from a distance also does good for the soul.
I continued jogging, and a little bit later, I spotted another acquaintance. It was Mark, who also seemed happy with his two wives. I was surprised by the good life he had achieved in Chakona. Perhaps, if I set my mind to it, I could take root here just as well, I thought.
After advancing a few kilometers, the beach next to the hotel where I stayed the first week appeared in front of me. The Chakonan sun was breaking at noon and again, the delicious sea breeze caressed my face. I ran along the seashore. In the distance, I saw another human couple, jogging. They were a man and a woman. They ran together, but suddenly, she stumbled in the sand, falling to her knees. Her partner helped her up and they continued running, both happy.
“Death is nothing more than a stumbling block, in the long race of existence. The will to reach the goal makes you keep moving forward,” Vroeg would have told me. After all the experiences and trials, I began to understand the meaning of those words. Similarly, “When the student is ready, the teacher appears” was an old terrestrial saying. And again, I smiled.
“Thank you for so much,” I said to my friend, with my heart.
I continued jogging. And little by little, I approached the mound where Vroeg and I had such deep talks. As I got closer, I observed—to my surprise—that there was a shiny-furred skunktaur resting on the spot. Apparently, hy was the same skunktaur he had seen yesterday, from the road.
Hey? Vroeg? I thought for a moment; but it was not possible. As I got even closer, I noticed that the skunktaur was a young specimen, and hy was in the female phase. Hy possessed an abundant mane of hair on hys head. Hys posture was the same that my friend used—torso upright, looking at the horizon.
I approached little by little from the side, as if trying to discover who this stranger was. Suddenly, hy turned hys head towards me. Hy had a lovely face, with big green eyes. Beautiful round breasts adorned hys torso. We stared at each other for a few seconds. I was speechless.
“Can I help you with something?” hy asked me suddenly.
“Eh? Well...no...” I said awkwardly.
“Excuse me...I just mistook you for someone who used to come here. I'm sorry,” I added. A gentle breeze stirred hys thick fur. Hy struck me as a lovely creature. Hy managed a smile.
“Excuse me, I'm leaving,” I said as I started jogging again.
“Wait!” hy exclaimed with a soft voice. “Are you Esteban Melinao?” I was surprised.
“Yeah, I am. Do we know each other?” I asked back.
“I don't think so, but I'm glad to find you,” hy replied. After standing up and coming down from the mound, hy approached me. Hy had a very nice fragrance.
Then hy continued, somewhat nervous. “I've been coming to this place, all these days hoping to see it. I was about to give up. Today I came for the last time. It's good that I finally found you.”
“But why are you looking for me?” I asked, intrigued.
“Oh, how clumsy I am. My name is Lilethe of House Redpaw. Vroeg was a friend of my family.”
“Nice to meet you, Lilethe,” I said as I shook hir hand. “Wow, so you were friends with the old skunktaur.”
“Well, my parents shared more with him in his youth. I had not seen Vroeg for many years. When I learned of his death, his family was kind enough to let me know that hy had left a message for me.”
“Oh, I understand. I learned that hy left a personal farewell message to each of hys friends and family.”
“That's how it is. Hys family informed me that you accompanied hym in hys final moments. But they didn't know where to find you. So, with the information they gave me, I decided to wait for you here, where you used to be with Vroeg.”
“Well, I was not here. I had to travel to New Bletchley, but I came back yesterday. And I will stay in Amistad for one year,” I told hym.
“I understand,” hy replied with a smile. Then hy took out of hys fanny pack a sealed paper envelope, one I had not seen for a long time, and handed it to me. “Here, it's for you,” hy said.
“What is this?” I asked.
“I suppose it is the personal message that Vroeg left you. Your name is written outside,” hy pointed out, as hy handed me the envelope marked for me.
“Hy also left me a message in an envelope. And next to him was yours. It is an old method, but I suppose that...in this way...hy wanted me to deliver it to you in person,” the skunktaur added.
I was surprised. I thought there was no need for Vroeg to leave me a message, after all that he had taught me.
“Thank you Lilethe, for your patience. This is very important to me,” I told her passionately, “And I am not surprised that Vroeg used these antiquated methods. Hy also liked to listen to my old music!” I added. We both laughed.
“Well, I suppose my mission is accomplished,” hy said. “Goodbye Esteban. It was nice meeting you.”
“Go...goodbye Lilethe. And thank you...” I said without much conviction. The skunktaur began to move away slowly, while the breeze ruffled hys fur and my hair at the same time. I stared at the envelope. I opened it and inside, there was a paper with several folds. At the top it said:
“THIS IS LILETHE.
TAKE CARE OF HER”
I was stumped. I looked back at the skunk as hy made her way to hys vehicle parked uphill. Further down, in another fold, the paper said:
“SAY HELLO TO YOUR PARENTS FOR ME”
And after a third fold, this was readable:
“DO NOT FORGET THAT LOVE IS A TRUTH THAT PASSES OUR MATERIAL FORM.
WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR...IDIOT?”
“Lilethe! Wait!” I exclaimed immediately. Hy stopped and turned to see me.
“Wait,” I called, as I reached hys side. “Would you like to have lunch with me? I invite you. I mean...to thank you for the kindness of giving me the envelope. Please?” I asked, almost pleading. Hy drew a wide smile on hys face.
“Okay, I accept,” hy replied tenderly, and then inquired, “Do you know any place?”
“Uh...Not really. I'm new to the city, and to the planet too.”
“Hahaha. Do not worry. I grew up in Amistad. I know good places. Come on,” hy said enthusiastically. We got into hys vehicle and left.
On the way I asked hym, “Lilethe, are you sure that no one read the message that Vroeg left me?”
“The farewell messages of the patriarchs are sacred, Esteban. No skunktaur would commit such sacrilege.”
“Ah...I see,” I answered.
“Why do you ask?”
“No, no, not for nothing,” I answered.
“The message hy left for you must have been beautiful, since you were hys last companion,” added Lilethe. Myself, I couldn't help but blush. Looking at hym, hy really seemed like the cutest skunktaur I've ever seen. Vroeg and I knew that on that day, my life would change forever.
“You're right Lilethe...it's a very beautiful message...” I said, as we drove together in hir vehicle towards the center of the city. Little by little, my senses were permeated by the pleasant smell of Lilethe, who seemed very happy at the time—as much as I was.
