Value and tone is basically greyscale shading. I tend to use pencil a lot, but I'm getting used to OpenCanvas' and Photoshop's brushes for digital shading.
I tend to see a lot of either outlined drawings like this with a high contrast background, or full colored works from ya. Adding some greyscale light and shadow might be fun to try out. :)
