CHAPTER 3 RENA SKUNTAUR
As the Renzar drove to Rena's house, Esteban thought about Lilethe, and how to tell hym how he felt about hym.
“Regt, tell me, how did you meet Sorah on Grom?”
“Eh?.. Well ... That was in a fighting tournament, in which I participated, for the personnel of the Federation settled in the planet. Sorah was in the audience.
“I see. But how did you become a couple?”
“Hmmm, after that, Sorah was going to watch me fight at all events. I noticed her presence in the audience. Until one day, she came up to me and looked me straight in the eye. There were not many words. We kiss, and then she and I...”
“I understand...details are not necessary heh heh. So she was the one who conquered you?”
“I think so. Esteban still she does it, with that look, every day,” Regt replied with a sigh.
“Wow, that's beautiful. It sounds like a fairy tale!”
“A tale about what?" inquired the Renzar curiously.
“I mean, the union of the two of you was very sensual. We humans use our heads too much for these things, I guess.”
“Ahhh...heh heh don't worry. You too will find a partner if you put your mind to it, boy!” Regt exclaimed, slapping the boy on the back with such force that he almost hit his face against the dash of the vehicle.
“Ouch!!”
“Grrr... I'm sorry. I still haven't learned to measure my strength with you. Sorry. Are you okay?”
“Yes, no problem... Ouch”
“You know, Esteban. I've been thinking that maybe Natany is a good match for you.”
“What?” The surprised human replied.
“You and us, we look more like any taurs. Except that we are a little bigger and hairier. Sorah and I could teach you...”
“Regthar, what are you talking about?”
"Maybe, don't you like my sister?" The human began to blush.
“What?! Well...yes...I say no! She is a very pretty girl...she's attractive, Regt, but I already told you... for humans, it's not that simple.”
“Oh I see.”
“Although you are a species with a special charm, despite how intimidating you can be. I don't know why, but before leaving the house, I kissed Natany, without trying. It was spontaneous, just like you and Sorah, I guess.”
“Grrr...heh heh heh. Wow, you surprise me son,” replied the Renzar.
“But now, my heart goes out to Lilethe. Of that I have no doubts, my friend.”
“Esteban. I don't mean to sound bad, but of all the races that inhabit Chakona, the skunktaurs are the ones that give me the least confidence. To me, they are strange creatures. They were initially your slaves, and their extraordinary abilities are a mere accident. Look what one of them tried to do in the tournament with his powers. Even in the past, I have known of attacks on humans. I'm afraid they still have a certain resentment towards your species, for the way their ancestors were treated,” the Renzar concluded seriously.
After hearing those words, the human plunged into his thoughts, while he watched their journey advance through the PTV window. After a while, he replied:
“Regt. If it weren't for a skunktaur who urged me to study engineering, 10 years ago, maybe I wouldn't be here. And when I arrived in Chakona, another skunktaur helped me overcome my emotional stumbling blocks from the past. And last but not least, hys sister generously gave me a scholarship to study at Dewclaw. They have all been wonderful people.”
“I believe that all races and all species have light and darkness. Because, we all run the same race in different bodies. Tell me, Regt, did someone force Brend to accept that dirty trick to win the tournament? It is not the species that defines a person, but what each one carries inside, be it human, renzar, skunktaur or chakat.
“Also, I think the human race owes a lot to the skunktaurs. Although my ancestors created them as slaves without will, after almost four hundred years, I feel that the new generations of humans, we are the ones who must secure the dignity that the skunktaurs deserve. And not only them, but all the creations of my ancestors, since without them our species would probably not exist. We are an ancient race, Regt. And in our history, we have made many mistakes. Too many. But, despite everything, I like to think that I am one of those who always get up, after stumbling,” he declared.
The Renzar was silent for a moment. Then with a smile, he answered.
“Your race is not only ancient, but also wise. I have nothing to say about it. If you love a skunktaur, I will support you. Sorah and I will do it, Esteban.”
“Tha...thank you Regt...Dad.” Esteban replied with a smile. After a few more minutes of touring, Regt entered a beautiful village of typical construction of Chakona. As they turned a corner, they finally arrived at Rena's house.
“We’re here. Do not worry. We in agreement?”
“Okay son. If you trust these people, so do I,” Regt replied.
After getting out of the vehicle, and knocking on the door, a young skunktaur appeared on the other side, accompanied by two small kits.
“You must be Esteban, right? My mother is waiting for you. Come in please” hy said with a warm voice. Inside, the house was cozy. The two kits recognized the boy immediately.
“Hello little ones, how have you been? He is my dad, Mr. Regthar.”
“A pleasure, sir. I am Holly Skunktaur and these are my brothers Teo and Cora. Mom is coming right away. Make yourself comfortable please.”
"Thanks Holly," Esteban replied. When Regt sat up, the kits immediately clambered onto his legs. The renzar caressed them nervously.
"Hey, I think they like you," said the human smiling.
"It seems so," agreed the big ‘bear.’ After a few minutes, Rena made hys appearance in the room. Hy was wearing a kitchen apron and hys slim, contoured figure fully reflected hys feminine phase.
“Rena!! Nice to see you!” Esteban exclaimed as he gave hym a warm hug.
“Oh my little one, the joy is mine!” Rena replied, licking his face gently.
“He is my father, Regtnar.”
"Oh nice to meet you," replied the aforementioned Renzar.
“Mr. Regtnar. Thank you very much for welcoming Esteban into your family,” the skunk said gratefully, while hy gave him a hug. The kits, excited, did not detach themselves from the feet of the Renzar.
“No...It's nothing. My wife and I love Esteban very much,” Regt replied, a little embarrassed.
“Please, it will be an honor for you to join us for lunch. I prepared a snack for you.” Esteban and Regt looked at each other, and accepted with pleasure.
After lunch, and after sharing some family anecdotes, Rena went to Esteban and talked to him.
“It's time for me to help you with yours. If you'll excuse us...” Rena suggested, getting up from the table, inviting Esteban to an adjoining room. Once alone, the skunk directed him.
“Now I want you to lie down on this blanket, with your head between my forepaws. Close your eyes and try to relax. Do not be afraid. Nothing bad will happen,” hy added, while the boy took the indicated position.
After a few minutes, Rena could perceive a feeling of anguish in hys chest. A feeling that Esteban projected, but that was not his. Hy opened hys eyes suddenly, breathing hard.
Next, Rena put hys hands on either side of Esteban's head and concentrated hys mind. Little by little, the skunk began to visualize some scenes from the human's life, as well as the memories of him with Vroeg. It made hym smile. However, hys goal was to scrutinize the boy's past events, so hy focused on that task.
“Eh? Rena, are you okay?” Esteban got up, worried.
“Yes. Yes. Don't worry...I think...”
“What's up Rena, did you discover something?” the human asked anxiously.
“Esteban, I think Lilethe...somehow...hy is mentally linked to you.
“What? But Rena. How is that possible? That happens between skunktaurs or chakats, since they have similar genes and nerves. But not with humans.”
“Hmmm...I'm not sure that's correct. When a telepathic skunk suffers from isolation, hy will desperately seek to mentally bond with someone.”
“Wait, do you mean Lilethe is suffering now?” Esteban asked worriedly.
“That's possible,” Rena answered crossing hys arms. “Although I can't be completely sure. But the truth is, something is wrong with hym, because hy transmits those negative emotions to you.”
“And why me Rena? Why me?” Inquired the boy with bright eyes. While the skunktaur caressed his face, hy replied.
“We naturally form a bond with those we love, Esteban.” The human stood up, dismayed.
“So, that could mean that Lilethe...”
“Undoubtedly... you are someone very special to hym,” finished Rena. Esteban couldn't help but be happy to hear that. After all, there was ‘something’ special between the two of them.
“Rena, I do not have the powers that you have, but what I feel for Lilethe, drives me to go with hym, as any human would. And all the more so if hy's in trouble. Hy is my friend, Vroeg entrusted hym to me. I can't fail hym.”
"Esteban, my father did not impose any obligation on you, of that I am sure." Rena clarified frankly.
“I know, Rena. I do it because it really is my wish. Thank you so much for everything. You have been very helpful to me. Your eyes...they remind me so much of hys,” Esteban said with gratitude, while he hugged the skunktaur with tenderness.
“Oh honey. My father was very wise in choosing you, I will always say so. Be careful son.” Hy replied sweetly.
“Don't worry Rena. Everything will be fine” said the human, before leaving the room.
"Esteban, everything okay son?" Regthar asked when he saw him leave.
“Yes Dad. This afternoon, I will travel to Berdoovia,” the boy declared with determination.
“Don't you want to stay with us a while longer? I haven't seen you for a long time, Esteban, and well, since you were my father's last companion, your presence brings hym back to my memory,” Rena pleaded. The boy, however, was anxious to return home and prepare for the six-hour trip to Berdoovia.
“Well I...I don't know, Regt, what do you think?”
The Renzar, playing enthusiastically with the kits Cora and Teo, replied.
“Heh heh... Take your time, son. This weekend I have free. I see you’re very impatient. I'm sure your friend Lilethe is fine. There is still time if you want to travel to Berdoovia.”
“It's okay Rena. What do you propose?”
“Come with me to the room. You too, Mr. Regtnar,” the skunktaur requested politely.
“Eh?” Regt responded in surprise.
“I don't want hym to distrust us. Please,” Regt gave up, embarrassed as he didn't know what to say. Everyone present went into the room and leaned back on the soft, wide quilt that Rena had on the floor. The kits and Holly snuggled up next to Regt. He began to caress them tenderly. He had never been so close to a skunktaur. Inside him, he felt that little by little, fear and mistrust were left behind. The kits began to emit a pleasant aroma, while they snuggled on it.
Esteban, following the custom, began to brush Rena's hairy and fluffy tail, just as Rogar had taught him. He enjoyed playing with hym, and thought how extraordinary skunks were despite the prejudices of others.
“Rena. Your scent is a lot like Vroeg's. Being with you takes me back to those days on the beach, when I was with hym, chatting and learning from every word that came out of hys mouth. Tell me Rena, why do you think your dad did not make a mental link with me, since that is possible among skunktaurs?”
The female, moved to tears as hy remembered Vroeg, pointed.
“Come, Esteban. Lean on me, as you did with hym.” The human then rested his head on Rena's body, allowing himself to be caressed by hym.
“For us skunktaurs, it is natural to share emotions and feelings through mental bonds. That strengthens our ties and creates deeper relationships. My father did not want to do that with you, not because you were human, but because hys love for you was so great that hy fully respected your freedom.
“Hy wanted you to love hym from your human condition, without ‘advantages.’ Using your heart freely. So the first thing hy did was give you my mother's diadem, so as not to force you to feel something for him with his special abilities. Because, Esteban, keep in mind that it is only possible to truly love, when you love from freedom,” Rena concluded with a smile.
“Oh dear Rena, listening to you, is to be with hym again. You have the same wisdom as hym. Thank you.” Esteban said passionately, while he got up to stand in front and give hym a tight hug.
“I love you Rena. You have a beautiful family. Your partner is very lucky to have you.”
“My Esteban. We also consider you part of it. You are always welcome, you and yours. There is something special about you, something that my father saw and that made hym choose you. I am sure that, whoever you choose, you will form a wonderful family, on Chakona or on Earth, because you are on your way to becoming a star.”
“I learned that from Vroeg.”
“No. You already brought it with you. Hy only helped discover it within yourself.” Rena said as hy tenderly kissed the boy's forehead.
“Rena!”
“Yes, that was the goodbye kiss you gave my father. Full of love. My whole family could feel that energy. We were with him at that moment.”
"Oh Rena!" Esteban exclaimed before falling to his knees and crying. The skunktaur crouched down as well, welcoming him into hys arms. Regt and the others also rose up and positioned themselves around them.
“Go and follow your heart,” said the skunktaur to Esteban, already calmer. “You are a great human being,” hy concluded.
“Thanks. I will do it. I love you.”
“And I you. We all love you!” Rena answered when hy saw that Holly and the kits had also piled up on them, hugging them. The Renzar, when contemplating the scene, understood how important the bond with these creatures was for Esteban. He proposed not to judge them a priori, and to the contrary, try to understand them better.
After saying goodbye to Rena's family, Esteban and Regt began their return home. While the Renzar was monitoring the PTV, he asked, “Are you okay, son?”
“Yes I am. Thanks Dad. I will travel to Berdoovia this afternoon.”
"Grrr ... I know that nothing Sorah and I do to stop it will work. You are very stubborn and now I think I understand why. So...I've decided to go with you!” He added, smiling.
“Are you serious? But, they are your days off. You don't have to waste them on my business.”
“Grrr...Esteban, don't say that! Now we are family. Also, someone has to take care of you. After what I saw at Rena's house, I understood why you love them so much, Esteban.”
“Regt, stop the vehicle, please,” said the human suddenly.
“Why? What's the matter?”
“Just do it,” Esteban insisted. After accessing and parking on the side of the street, the Renzar inquired.
“What's up son?”
The human unbuckled his belt and slid over to him.
“Regt, when I arrived in Chakona, you were the first to welcome me with a hug. You were the first to protect me when I was in trouble, and you and Sorah were the first to remind me of how you live as a family, where everyone cares about everyone. Vroeg helped me a lot, and I loved hym like no one else in a brotherly way. But you, you have become the most important being in my life. I love you, not only because I consider you my dad, but because you are kind, generous, noble and have a huge heart.
“Esteban...”
“What if...I am willing to learn from you everything you want to teach me. About whatever! Your culture, your planet, your traditions. Because I feel lucky to have you by my side. And believe me it will be a great honor and I will be very happy that you accompany me to Berdoovia!” the boy concluded emotionally. Regt, moved by such words, got out of his seat and wrapped Esteban in a warm hug.
“I love you dad,” the human whispered.
“And I love you more,” Regthar replied with tears on his cheeks. “And it also makes me happy to do things together, as father and son.”
“Very good! Then we are going to Berdoovia!” Esteban exclaimed, wiping the tears on Regt's fur.
“Yes! Although I have never been and I don't know how to get there!” Regt replied enthusiastically.
“Yes!! ...wait...what?”
“Uh...well...But we'll find out!!!”
“Ha ha ha...very good.” Esteban exclaimed, and then he returned to his seat and continued on his way home with his dear friend and father.
