My second story in return of a trade series between me and Megz from ToyHouse! Her character, Draco, is in this second part.
"Ha ha ha ha…!!!" An arrow slams into the center of the target board that has been set up against a tree. For the time being, Draco is practicing his archery to hone his experience with a bow and arrow. Though he is proficient with using a sword in combat, archery is the next best thing.
In fact, during their initial flight, Finn and Gunther explained to the knight that archery is used in both fighting and hunting, though it comes at a much greater cost. In fighting, the archer must be careful on the battlefield, especially when allies are present. Care must be exercised not to shoot the ally when targeting the enemy. Hunting poses a greater challenge depending on the difficulty of the prey that is sought after. The most important aspect of archery is the wind, where speed and direction of travel is vital.
During the archery practice, Finn and Gunther are both observing the black knight with keen attention, watching him wind back and release. From the way he aimed and fired, it appears that Draco is a pro, having practiced this sort of activity for a long time; something that made Finn grow curious.
"Hey Draco, can I ask you something?" Draco's in the midst of firing his next arrow when his ears perk up to his name being mentioned. The black knight averts his green eyes away from the sights, lowering his weapon while spinning around to face Finn. The green dragon is now standing directly before him, an inquisitive gaze in his golden eyes.
Puzzled, Draco purses his lips in thought, wondering what Finn had to request of him in question. The black dragon freely shrugs and accepts, telling Finn, "Sure, why not? I'd be happy to answer your question to the best of my abilities."
Even Gunther steps forward to listen in, his own ears going up in keen anticipation of what the conversation will be about. Once the red warrior dragon marches in beside Finn, Gunther stretches his own large wings out, preparing himself in advance for takeoff.
Finn gives his buddy a funny look before returning his golden gaze to Draco, finally asking him, "How long have you done archery? From the way you line your shots up, you seem to be a complete monster at it."
Draco ponders a bit on Finn's assumption and explanation to let it sink in when he actually smiled at the two warriors in return, pleased at hearing the green dragon comment on his ability. Draco waves dismissively at the assumption, claiming in humility, "Archery is merely a skill that I have picked up from a close friend of mine in the kingdom. It is because of him that I have honed my archery skills. Rest assured, Finn, that I am not a professional at this. It is simply one of the many things I must be able to practice to uphold my status as a knight for my kingdom."
"Close friend?" Gunther's own marigold eyes widen in excited intrigue from hearing this being mentioned. Flapping his own large wings, the red dragon starts to lift off, rising from the ground; instead of flying away, he stays still in the air, beating his wings to keep himself afloat.
Draco seemingly chuckles at Gunther's excitement, confirming the red dragon's assumption. "Yes, I have a close friend; we are training and traveling buddies. He told me he was going to write to me when I departed, so I am expecting a letter from him some time this week. His name is Dark, by the way, and he is a wolf."
The two warriors appear thrilled at the mention of hearing who Draco's buddy is and they exchange glances in excited satisfaction. Gunther requests in return, "You have to bring him here! We'd love to meet him!"
"But we have to bring Draco to the chief first," Finn reminds his fellow warrior in passing, "Once the chief has the final say, that will determine not only if Draco stays or not, but also if he can bring his friend over to our land."
"Oh right, Eh heh heh…" Gunther touches down from his brief midair levitating while grinning nervously. He rubs his neck afterwards while averting his eyes away, feeling humiliated. Yet he cuts his eyes back to the two dragons and freely admits, "I keep forgetting about that! I'm just so excited at meeting a royal dragon and hoping that he'll stay with us!"
"Rest assured that you are free to visit regardless of your chieftain's final verdict on the matter." Draco assures the duo, smiling in admiration of the two. He casts his green eyes directly over to Finn in particular, ready to mention something when a screeching roar is heard from above, a new one at that.
Immediately, Gunther takes to the air to take a better look, his large wings beating against the air while he keeps his marigold eyes narrowed in anticipation. And for cautionary measure, the red warrior draws his sword in preparation for an upcoming attack. But the incoming missile wasn't targeting Gunther...
Finn is the next to take to the air to meet Gunther, hearing a closer roar. Even Draco is tuned in, listening attentively. He calls out to the duo, "Do you see anyth-- *WHAM!*"
The two tribal warriors observe in alarm from above as an orange blur streaks down and slams Draco from the side, completely blindsiding the black knight; both dragons are thrown into a brief cartwheel before separating. Once they separate, Draco immediately draws his sword in preparation for battle with the orange dragon doing the same. But before anyone can make a move, Finn immediately flies down to get between them in a desperate attempt to prevent bloodshed. "Elay! Elay! ELAY!!! What are you doing?!"
Blinking in surprise, Draco directs his green eyes to the orange dragon; 'Elay,' the black dragon thought inquisitively to himself, 'so that's the name of that orange dragon… no matter! But why is Finn…?'
Though Draco is perplexed to see Finn's back to him, he inclines his gaze slightly upwards to see Gunther joining in, landing next to Finn and also protecting Draco as well. This is when Draco realizes in recognition, 'They're protecting me; a lone knight! But why? Even if I am not welcomed to these lands anyway, it makes no difference!'
Finn and Gunther are protecting Draco from the orange dragon across from them, but Elay's attire bespeaks royalty itself: gray loincloth, white sash, black wristbands, and a golden headband atop his head with jewels encrusted into it. Is this dragon also of royal status or is he masquerading as a monarch?
Draco stays silent, but he opens his large wings and flaps them to lift off the ground, keeping a two-way visual between him and Elay. It is at this moment that their eyes meet in wondrous astonishment from viewing and surveying each other.
Before anyone can respond or make a peep, Elay acknowledges and demands, "Finn, Gunther, I appreciate you guys keeping this black dragon here, but is there a reason why you're protecting him?"
"Is there a reason why you attacked Draco in the first place?" Finn retorts back in a snarky manner, folding his arms along his bare chest.
In a flash, Finn finds himself shielding his face from black smoke being blown out through Elay's mouth in response to the retort. The response from Elay is swift and nonverbal. Then once the smoke subsides with Finn uncovering his face, Elay dismisses the two warriors, "Finn, Gunther, the two of you can go. I'll handle this guy."
The two warriors depart, but not without shooting Elay a final warning glance to advise him to be careful. Elay, on the other hand, is more focused on the levitating black dragon before him rather than some warning. The orange dragon opens up his own large wings and starts to flap them to raise himself off the ground to meet Draco face to face. Just what is this black dragon doing here in these lands?
Once Elay casts his admiral blue colored eyes towards Draco, the orange dragon grows surprised to see the jewelry adorning his form. Draco, however, remains suspicious about this one, not taking his green eyes off of Elay.
"Are you a prince or an imposing masquerade?" Draco spoke suddenly and suspiciously. That sudden assumption catches Elay completely by surprise, making the orange dragon gawk at the black dragon in return.
His admiral blue eyes inflating in surprise, Elay returns, "What makes you believe I am an impostor? Of course I am a prince! Yes, I am a prince! What are you? You seem to be of some sort of royal bloodline as well. Are you a king? An escort? What exactly?"
Draco huffs in response, slightly annoyed by the orange dragon and his incessant probing. The black dragon frankly reveals, "I am a royal knight from the kingdom of Dynevor and I am seeking to establish relations with the leader of this tribe of dragons."
Elay's response comes in an excited flight; both dragons are still in midair while flapping their wings. When Elay hears word from the black dragon himself about his royal status, Elay flies at Draco and slams into him; this time, it wasn't an attack but an excited tackle hug, somewhat similar to Gunther's excited mood change and reaction from learning about Draco's royal status.
Draco's green eyes widen in surprise from the unexpected tackle hug and he trails his green eyes downwards to Elay, shooting the orange dragon an alarmed expression. He demands warily, "What-- hey, what are you doing?!"
Elay ignores Draco's complaining and releases him, letting him catch his breath while swooping upwards in mid-flight. The orange prince comments, "We have never ever seen or encountered knights in our land, not even from monarchies! This is going to be so exciting!!! I can't wait!"
After recovering from his recoil, Draco begins ascending to meet Elay at a higher altitude to match height and eye level, though when he listens attentively to Elay's speech, he grows perplexed, casting the orange dragon an inquisitive green-eyed stare. He questions the prince on the matter, "Elay, right? Well since you appear to be a prince and claim yourself to be one, I can see for myself that you indeed are of royal blood. But, if I may ask, where do you plan on taking me?"
The prince happily offers, "I will bring you to meet my brother and father! They will be elated at having a knight in their presence! My father does have the final say in matters, so I am giving you a warning in advance!"
Draco rubs his chin in thought. Elay does seek trustworthy enough to not actually turn on him suddenly. And despite the initially hostile encounter, Elay quickly softened up upon surveying him, mainly by his attire. But clothing alone doesn't always tell what type of person one will meet, royalty or not. Guess Draco will have to really find out for himself whether or not Elay really is a prince after all, but from what the orange dragon mentioned, the way he spoke definitely befits his royal status. Maybe things won't be so bad after all, so they hoped...
After some thought, Draco finally agrees to the proposal, lightly hunching his shoulders in a shrug while agreeing, "Why not? I wouldn't mind meeting your relatives if they don't show any ill will towards me. They will have to see for themselves that I am of royal status. No need for me to flaunt it around."
A playful punch to the right shoulder leaves Draco rubbing the spot where he is tagged and watching Elay fly away. Shaking his head, Draco flaps his wings and proceeds to soar away to catch up with Elay; he begins to wonder about this prince and how he acted. But knowing him, it shouldn't be too bad. Guess he'll just have to wait and see for himself whether he stays or goes.
