I actually like that bit! Barehanded and all, it's a low-key absurd image for our world, but fits the setting well... and isn't something th't just anyone can do in that fantasy world, either.

It (I'm pretty sure coincidentally) reminds me of the scene in Jaws I where the seaman crumples an old skool metal beer can, and then the more academic guy (successfully or not; one's milage may vary) makes a joke of that by crumpling a paper cup just as theatrically.
