(Commission for
demascus )
While I could never be in the army for medical reasons (flatfooted, wouldn't be able to run right for an extended period of time. I'm also a bit of a fatty but nothing basic couldn't shave off me), I do strongly support the troops, so when Demascus came back to me after dangling this commission over my head for months and offered this idea, I was behind it all the way.
Wouldja believe his unit was using one of my other pieces (Evening Officer) as a pinup in their commons area? Blew my mind that my stuff is over in afghanistan cheering the troops up. Well, here's one more, guys! Treat her well!

Probably not, but interestingly, I was in that unit with this guy: http://encyclopediadramatica.com/Bucky_bunny
Yeah, he was just as bad as his ED entry says. >_<

Nope. He was really in the Army. National Guard and Reservists do their training as active duty, and he happened to get to my training unit (same company, different platoon IIRC) a few months before I left it. That was mid-2006. I only remember him because he stood out as a weirdo among weirdoes (We all did electronics repair, so naturally almost all of use were geeks of some form or another) and he stuck around me because I was a furry too. I'll be damned if I remember what his actual job was, though.
At Wal-Mart back in 04-05 I used to work with a guy who looked like him who claimed he was in the army but couldn't hack boot camp. I don't think it was Bucky though, but I never did catch his name. He wasn't so much of a weirdo as he was a guy who seemed angry all the time and kept to himself.
Reading up on the ED page, I think it's awesome that they finally nailed the guy, and that his ties to the fandom got him convicted in two states! If it weren't for all the warnings in the fandom about him, I doubt he would have been connected to both thefts.

I can't speak for the other services, but the Marines with our obsession for bulldogs and other beasts as symbols of badassery tends to invite a lot of anthropomorphic art. I've seen so many unit shirts that have pretty masterfully drawn furries (usually wolves, tigers, horses, bulldogs, etc) in various states of machinegun-wielding cigar-puffing buffness. I wouldn't say that anyone's political leanings really affect it much, unless you're talking about the more extremely explicit kinds of furry art, which could get you in trouble in some cases.
Politically in my op-field I'd say it's more like 2/3 right-leaning and 1/3 left. A good portion of the Marines in my unit are pretty liberal (pro-choice, pro-gay marriage, anti-DADT, etc), though regardless of political leanings, all except 1 Marine that I work with are in favor of the Afghan war, and were in favor of Iraq. It's really mixed up with lots of surprising grey areas when you get down to it.

Well the fondness for anthropomorphic symbols of badassery isn't what surprises me, I'm pretty aware of that actually, I meant it was surprising to me you said so many marines are furries it's ridiculous, considering I had the impression the US military is generally rather conservative.
Using anthros for decals and unit shirts is one thing of course, but actual furries are more often than not involved in the more explicit parts of the fandom, and that's where I found the conflict.

I never really found it to be much conflict, actually. I know a lot of conservative-minded furries in the military, not just the Marines. Drawing yourself as an anthro or playing one in SL or going to conventions doesn't really have much to do with one's voting habits when you get down to it.
True, it probably helps to have an insiders view naturally.
Ultimately engaging in those activities doesn't have anything to do with your political orientation. I guess it's more a question of culture or sub-culture, and that conservatives are more reluctant to join the ranks of furries, just my impression. I'm at least pretty sure liberals and especially socialists are over-represented in the furry fandom.

Well, speaking as someone involved in multiple subcultures over the years, ranging from goth to punk to furry to rivethead, I've run into plenty of conservatives. Naturally there will be more left/center-minded people than right-wingers in subcultures like this, but you generally don't have to look too far in my experience, especially for goths, rivets and/or furries in the military. :>
No, but it does help out a lot, as you're pretty safe from getting booted out of the country while you're in. XD
When I was in Korea, I had a few Mexican friends working on their citizenship. However, you can't have a clearance until you're a citizen, so that keeps you from some MOSes.

As much as I support any military action during war time I cant help but feel most modern day wars are fought for selfish assholes wanting nothing more than resources and oil, no offense to the troops anywhere, I just think the people sending them to places in the world aren't doing it for the right reasons. Either way, really nice pic!
Don't know what to say that hasn't already been said. I really like the character, and the fact that it's an afghan wild dog. Something different for sure, and different is often fun to see. Personally, I also like how you designed the pants; the strap instead of simply a hole for the tail. Certainly makes more sense. And, of course, the pose is lovely.
I guess it's great to hear that you support our troops for their hardships, and they've shown that they appreciate your support. There's little like the feeling of knowing that what you do is honestly appreciated, for both you, and our men and women in the armed forces.
Semper Fidelis.

"Behind" this picture? "Support" The troops? More appropriate puns please. :)
Same here, as in, i tried to get in the reserves, medical problem (Heart Murmur) and that was that. But my entire family was in the military in one form or another, so I felt bad I couldn't make it. :P
Great pic though. :)

Personal opinions on the war aside, slapping a "murderers" or "baby killer" label on the military? With that train of thought why not label all Germans as Antisemitic or all Muslims as religious fanatical zealots? Yes, the US military done some wrongs in the past, arguably every military organization around the world has at some point or another. Until you are the boots on the ground in countries that YOU have only seen, watched or read about from the comfort and safety your couch and/or computer! Then you may pass judgment, pull out the label machine and think how witty you are.

Hippies=scum?
Dictionary: hip·pie hip·py
A person who opposes and rejects many of the conventional standards and customs of society; advocates extreme liberalism in politics and lifestyle.
What is the opposite of liberalism?
The true opposite of a liberal is a fascist. Many make the mistake of defining a conservative as the opposite of a liberal, but the opposite of a conservative is a progressive.
Problem, fascist scum?

Not trying to take sides here but if you and Einsmann look at one of Strype's replies, he doesn't support the war or the reasons why the Army is there, but he supports the troops.
Einsmann jumped to an unnecessary conclusion of Strype's motives for drawing this picture without checking all the facts first. Trolling for the sake of trolling is just not cool in anyones book.

I wasn't focussing on him liking troops or whatever - I focussed on the way that he used the word "scum" and "hippie" in the same sentence. Frankly, I don’t give a rats arse about whether he prefers to side with troops or the army, war monger or not, but when someone starts picking on someone’s political stature and belief in free-willed life, that’s when I do care. A lot.
Strype, you probably could have gotten into the military. My father is flat-footed and was prior service Marine Corps. A good decade later, 9/11, he re-enlisted to get sent out (which never happened, he got stuck as a pencil pusher) but regardless. My dad was flat-footed, and usually one of the best in his unit.
And looking through these comments, I'm astonished at the amount of comments bashing those who make sure we can all sleep at night. It's sick, really.
Thumbs up for your support, man.

This is just so well done I'm at a loss for words. The anatomy is so strongly executed while not being overwrought that I'm left to pick my jaw up off the floor. Everything is drawn with such lovely attention to appealing proportions and the texture work is simply marvelous! I love this view with her expression and glance back over the shoulder as though she's presenting her best view but knowing she's got a knockout followup with the forthcoming view from the front. Oh man, this is just all kinds of awesome. Bravo man, BRAVO!
you know, even two years later this piece is still perfect. I can't tell what I like more, that hair or those hips.
omigod those hips are fantastic
and funnily enough, my old man was a corpsman in Golf company, 2/5 and later 2/1. although to my knowledge he only went into Kuwait and Iraq. I don't think they sent him into Afghanistan. Still, it's funny seeing all the things that I can relate to in this pic.
and of course, I find it completely awesome that they had your art up there. Clearly the guys in that unit had great taste.
