sometimes I run in to this problem as well lol XP
so I usually keep google translate open in a second window or tab just in case.
it's not one hundred percent accurate but it does a fairly good job, so long as your not attempting to translate
any slang or abbreviated words ^^;

I think it kind of goes both ways. I personally find it hard to talk to people who don't speak English as a first language because of that nagging feeling that they might not understand everything that's being said. Translators can only do so much, after all.
In this case, it's doubly embarrassing because I'm Chinese-American, but never actually learned how to read or write it.

This is inherent to learning any foreign language. For example, the extent of my proficiency in German correlates well with the number of Germans who think I have an awkward manner of speaking*. It's the best way to learn, though: There's nothing like talking to native speakers when it comes to learning how people actually use a language.
Hence, I look forward to the future's awkward conversations in things other than English, because I will learn in the process.
*To be fair, most English-speakers think I sound funny too, and that's my native language.

Language is a barrier but one we can all overcome. Those of us that can only understand English and have no skill when learning other languages should learn to write English fully. It is not your fault if your struggle, it is partially our own for not making sure what we are typing is actually within the English dictionary.
As Shokuji suggested, a translator may be of some assistance. What it says may not make much sense though so we'd all have to take some initiative and after translation, we'd have to reform the words to make sense. To some degree we can blame our parents and teachers. If they'd taught us more languages when we were younger we would probably be able to understand each other without the need of translators, and other such things.
