¡Viva La Tiérra! - From the Yorktown Sports Daily
LORAIN (Ohio) - The Williamsburg Minutemen spoke the entire off-season about a new beginning, a fresh start for the franchise that was the worst in the league last season.
Their newest draft picks gave them that fresh start.
Rookies Vera La Tiérra and Damien Nathaniel scored 50 total points and the Minutmen rolled to a 110-100 victory over the Lorain Firestorm.
La Tiérra, the #1 pick in October's draft, began her FBA debut by leading the Minutemen offense in the first quarter. Her 14 points paced the club during the opening minutes, helping them keep pace with the Firestorm's trio of minks: Gerry Cross, Aisha Melbourne and Eric Haber. The vixen finished with a team-leading 29 points on 11-20 shooting, 2-4 in threes and a perfect 5-5 at the line.
"It's an incredible way to start my FBA career," said La Tiérra. "I hope I can continue to do this well."
Fellow draft pick Damien Nathaniel broke the game open for the Minutemen, coming off the bench and hitting all four of his three-point tries in the second quarter.
"As soon as I hit that first trey, I knew it was going to be my night," said Nathaniel. "The fourth one gave us the eight-point lead and it held up." The hyena shot 7-16 from the floor, but 5-of-9 in 3-pointers and finished with 21 points. Teo Masalia scored 17 points for Williamsburg and Lenny Hicks added 15.
The Minutemen shot 45% from the field and hit 57% of their 3-pointers on 8-14 shooting. The Firestorm only made one three the entire game.
"They kept pounding inside with their shooting and rebounding, but we kept pushing back, and I'm very proud of that effort," Coach Roosevelt said.
Center Nick Nwabudike led both teams with 16 rebounds, The Firestorm out-rebounded the Minutemen 46-41, with Aisha Melbourne and Erich Haber grabbing 13 and 14 rebounds respectively.
"I thought we did well, but they did better. That's that," said Melborune.
GAME STATS AND NOTES:
The Minutmen shot 8-of-14 (.571) from three-point distance and hit 24-of-26 (.923) free throws... Nwabudike's 16 rebounds were the most in an opening game for the Minutemen since Zak Pejovic grabbed 18 boards against the Springfield Fusion in the 2001-02 opener... Hicks, despite shooting 62% at the line last season, hit 7-of-8 free throws. He credits Damien Nathaniel helping him out with his form. "I knew I was doing something wrong... didn't think a kid could figure it out, but I'm glad he did," he said.
