WILLIAMSBURG - Vera La Tiérra hit a floating jumper with 0.8 seconds left to cap a foruth quarter comback and the Williamsburg Minutemen defeated the Pittsburgh Keystones 97-96 on Friday night.
La Tiérra scored 18 points in the game. The Minutmen overcame a poor second quarter and seven-point halftime deficit to win their second game in as many tries. Nick Nwabudike scored 18 points and pulled down 15 rebounds. Teo Masalia, Lenny Hicks and Damien Nathaniel each added 11 points.
Rookie guard Gilbert Exen had 15 points for the Keystones, all coming on three-pointers. Pittsburgh led by as many as ten points in the second quarter, fueled partly by Exen's three treys. Outscoring Williamsburg 31-20 in the frame, the Keystones took a seven-point lead into the locker room.
"I knew we had to make some adjustments at halftime," said Coach Roosevelt. "We let the game get away. We couldn't have that happen again."
The Minutemen chipped away at Pittsburgh's slim lead in the fourth quarter, finally evening the score with an open three from Damien Nathaniel with 19.2 seconds to go that sent the crowd into a frenzy.
"The place was as loud as I've ever heard it, and that includes the playoffs," Reggie Mackenzie said. "It was great."
Masalia then committed a foul on Marcus Baylor while trying to pick off his inbound pass. The polar bear missed the first free throw, but made the second, giving Pittsburgh a one-point lead.
La Tiérra dribbled down the clock and executed a spin move on Rolf Sweetster and Alex Rios, then uncorked a floater that arched over center Doug Day and fell through the hoop with 0.8 seconds left on the clock.
"When I let go of the shot, I knew I had it," Vera said, the confidence in her voice evidenced with a knowing smile.
"I couldn't believe it," said Day. "Not only did she get the shot over me, she got it in the hoop. It was surreal."
Sweetster attempted a desperation heave after a quick inbounds pass, but the ball fell short of the hoop.
Griff Rasputin led the Keystones with 24 points and Marcus Baylor added 21 for the visiting club. The Minutemen next play on Tuesday in Newark agains the Pride.
