It is allways a good way to keep your players on their toes/to avoid things getting stale by breaking archetypes or doing somethig generally unexpected with a character and class combo. Like that one time I used a fairy as the adventures BBEG. Noone expected the pale looking fairy with the tattered clothes and wings and huge bags under her eyes to actually be a 750+ years old vampire lord who was able to backhand the groups plate armored troll warrior halfway across the room (in the system we play, vampires gain Str way above their racial limit the older they get, +1 Str for each 50 years of existence plus vampire blood fuckery). To this very day, my players have not forgotten Mosquitto, the terror of Flimmerwood.

To be fair though, I got extremly lucky with my DM rolls that session and my players got hung up on a semi-intended red herring in form of another vampire (who was your typical chalice swishing, flamboyantly dressed bloodsucker) that was also present, mistaking the fairy for a magic casting servant to the vampire.

XD yeah that happens quite often.
