Book 1: The Fear Ripper
Chapter 1: The Birth of Evil
Part 4: Welcome to Warfang
Still followed by the crowd watching the heroes with hope and renewed energy, the group arrived at the bottom of a large staircase where there were four guards, in armor different from those circulating in the streets. Surely well-trained guards, even the best soldiers in Warfang. At the top of the markets was the Temple of the Sages. It was medium in size, accommodating more than a dozen adult dragons. It was a modest building despite the importance of the dragons that lived there, called "the sages". His last opened the doors, revealing 3 large dragons, even larger than Spyro.
The one on the left was a yellow dragon, with blue tints to the horns, torso, and its double-bladed tail, as well as parts of its body. There were light yellow lightning symbols on its sides. The dragon on the right was an icy blue color, whose horns, torso, and parts of its body were a purple/purple hue, with several spikes on its shoulders, cheeks, and along its back. His body had white spots in the shape of icicles.
The middle dragon, and the most massive, was a very muscular green dragon with brown tints at the level of the horns, the torso and its tail in the form of an imposing spiky ball, which could crush a grublin with a single blow. A few brown scales protruded from his shoulders, and had a goatee-like appearance on his chin. His face had an expression that was both hard and benevolent.
The latter flew away, followed by the two other dragons who flanked him, for all the three wise men to land gently in front of Hunter who bowed slightly. The sound of their paws touching the ground gave way to absolute silence. No more murmurs came from the crowd which followed and half-encircled the group of heroes.
"Hunter, Spyro, Cynder, welcome back to Warfang!" Exclaimed the green dragon who had a big voice that surprised Flame. The red dragon stuck to Spyro's side, very intimidated by the sage in front of him. The purple dragon covered him with its wing.
"All is well Flamy. Terrador, Volteer and Cyril are trustworthy dragons." Spyro reassured him by whispering his words, turning his head to Flame. Terrador, the imposing green and wise dragon of the element of earth looked at Flame as well as the two other dragons.
"Welcome, too, friends of Spyro and Cynder. I am Terrador, guardian of the earth, and here..."
"Hello! I'm Volteer, Electricity Keeper. Hope you're on your way! We were wondering when you'll be arriving." exclaimed the yellow dragon without stopping.
"Calm down Volteer, they've come a long way. And you could let me introduce myself!" Interrupted Cyril who cleared his throat to continue.
"Hum Hum. Welcome traveler, my name is Cyril, ice keeper from father to son for 4 generations..."
"Blablabla, always value your royal lineage" roughly resumed Volteer.
One started to retort the other's sentences under the incomprehensible gaze of Flame, Ember and Ashes. Spyro and Cynder looked at each other, biting their lips to keep from laughing. Their quarrels were a daily occurrence for Warfang, so Hunter and Terrador looked at each other without saying a word, glancing up in the air when an answer was more absurd than the previous one. It could last several minutes between the talkative electricity sage and the haughty ice guardian by the royal side of his ancestors.
After five minutes of whelping quarrels between the two guardians, Terrador turned around and sat down to stare at each in turn. The guardian of the earth waggled his ball-shaped tail, its spikes brushing against the cobblestone floor of the city. The other two guards swallowed their saliva and remained silent. Terrador again faced the groups of heroes while the ball of its tail fell to the ground without damaging the cobblestones, close to one of the two front legs of each guardian. Volteer and Cyril let out a little cry of surprise as they pulled their front legs back.
"So! As I was telling you, welcome to Warfang Spyro, Cynder and your friends. Thank you Hunter for guiding them here" Terrador resumed under the silence of his two fellow guardians.
"Thank you very much Terrador. This is Flame, the dragon I care about a lot, her sister Ember and her friend Ashes." Spyro replied, pointing to his friends under Flame's blush. Then he resumed
"We need to talk."
"In effect." Terrador retorted quite directly, which made Spyro nervous.
The purple dragon feared that it would be returned to the subject that he would be the best successor to the title of the sage of fire. But Spyro always refused because it meant staying separated from Flame who lived on his island at that time, and since the reconciliations with his mother, it would complicate things a lot more. Spyro turns to his love and hugs him in his front paws.
"I would let no one separate us Flamy, my love!" He put his muzzle on that of the red dragon without him being able to do or say anything, under the astonishment of Flame felt her body warm up suddenly. The people of Warfang understood the connection between Spyro and the red dragon, which made Flame important to Warfang at this time.
"I.... I know it my love! And it's the same for me." Flame answered him while he caressed the cheeks of his purple love.
"And no one has an interest in getting between my little brother and his boyfriend!" Ember growled looking at them in support.
"This person will have to deal with us!" Ashes followed, associating with her friend.
They looked at each other, nodding, then turned to the couple who smiled at them. Terrador and the other two sages were halfway up the stairs to reach the temple, as the crowd dispersed and the citizens returned to their business. Hunter placed each of his hands on one shoulder of the two dragons.
"You'll be fine my friends. Prior to his disappearance, Ignitus didn't appoint Terrador as 'leader' of Warfang for nothing." Said the cheetah with great wisdom.
This gave courage to the couples who advanced after the guards and Hunter, followed by their 3 dragon friends, as well as the little dragonfly who always remained discreet. They reached the gates of the temple and entered inside. The room was round and divided into four parts: the front door, and three corridors. The ceiling did the same with four dragon sculptures which joined in the center of the rounded ceiling. Each dragon had a different physical appearance, representing the four elements of the sages: electricity, earth, ice, fire. Ledges on the walls allowed flames to burn long-lasting fuel to light the room. In the center of this huge room was a large carved round table. Flame understood that it was surely a kind of council room for the sages to gather there.
The three sages settled down opposite the front door and stared at the group. Everyone was spread around the huge table. Spyro was facing Terrador, Flame still next to the purple dragon. Ember sat next to her little brother who she always kept an eye on. Cynder, Ashes and Hunter had settled on the other side of Spyro.
Terrador looked at a few scrolls in front of him and tidied them up a bit. Then he looked at the purple dragon.
"Don't worry Spyro, I won't talk about our problem on the new fire sage. That would have solved some problems, but we accept your choice." reassured the guardian of the earth.
"Still happy !" Loose Flame frowning, then placed one of his front paws on his muzzle after realizing what he had said, to everyone's astonished gaze, and Spyro's tenderness.
"Excuse me Terrador..." Flame apologized looking at Terrador who was surprised and not angry. The boldness of the red dragon was respectable in the eyes of the great green dragon.
"So our biggest problem is what Hunter sent us by his eagle. This threat of this dragon, or this creature described by Hunter during his appeal to the Chronicler concerns me greatly. If this creature appropriates fear souls, Warfang is threatened because his people fear that the city will collapse following the disappearance of Ignitus. Until another fire sage is chosen, this general fear will hang over Warfang." Explained Terrador to the group of heroes.
"Master Terrador... What are the criteria for becoming Fire Sage?" Ashes asked shyly with respect. Terrador answered him.
"Very relevant question young Ashes dragon. The person has to be a dragon, male or female, to withstand the ancient power of fire. For any other creatures, it might be too dangerous. It also requires that person to be old enough to withstand the ancient power of fire. Receipt of this power. And finally, this person must be recognized as being trustworthy by his actions with the other sages, myself and the Chronicler himself. If this does not turn out to be the case, the transfer of this ancient power will not happen, and the person will not be recognized as ready or worthy. And of course... The person has to be willing. Strangely, this is the easiest condition to meet, except in case, which I understand now." Explained the guardian of the earth, pointing to Spyro's eyes, without judging him.
Before Spyro's return, Terrador did not understand why the purple dragon refused to take on this role, as it was a great honor, despite the great responsibility. But seeing the bond between Spyro and Flame, becoming fire wise would have prevented the purple dragon from ever seeing his love again.
"So there's no need to be noble or of royal blood?" Resumed Ashes
"Let's just say it can be important..." Cyril began, going to recount his story of his ancestors who had succeeded to the role of guardian of the ice, because his last had been judged as deserving dragons and dragonesses. Terrador growled at him to cut him off because noble or royal blood didn't matter.
"Terra...." Flame interrupted before continuing.
"Master Terrador... What are the responsibilities of a sage, to become guardian of an element?" Terrador looked at him.
"Do you see young dragon, being guardian, or wise if you prefer, of an element implies being responsible for the protection of this element, and using its power to help and protect. And therefore to be constantly at the look out for any evil force to manifest. Which means no travel..." Terrador replied.
Flame understood at that moment that if Spyro had accepted, he would not have been able to come back to see his childhood sweetheart, nor to travel with him. The red dragon looked at the purple dragon.
"Is that why you refused despite your fondness for Ignitus? You refused...for me?" Said he has her love shedding a few tears of emotion and laid his head in her neck in emotion.
"Yes, nothing else mattered to me than to find you after I finished my mission in this Flamy world..." Spyro replied, resting his chin on his love's face.
Then they remembered that they weren't alone, and took off, clearing their throats a little embarrassed. The 3 females smiled at them, used to their fooling around, and found it endearing.
"But Spyro, now that we're together, you can accept if you want. I'll stay by your side!" Resumed Flame to make things clear.
"Yes I could, but it will mean not having so much time for us, for our couple, or to travel with all of you friends. After saving the world with Cynder, I want to live my life as I see fit, even if we respond present to help you face this new threat. Spyro replied looking at everyone in turn.
"And that's normal! You've already done a lot on our island, and even more here! And you deserve this happiness with my little brother!" Ember answered who ceased to be silent and discreet.
"I agree with Ember!" Ashes answered, followed by Cynder who looked at the dragon.
"Me too !" They smiled then looked back at the couple. Their words touched Flame and Spyro a lot. Hunter, who had been watching, spoke.
"Master Terrador, is it possible that Spyro takes on the role of sage of fire while being able to live as he pleases. Because in addition to being a guardian, he remains the purple dragon of legend. After all from the beginning, he traveling to help and save people. It will be even more beneficial if he is accompanied by the dragon of his heart as well as his friends." Hunter spoke shrewdly.
He wanted to settle the problem of Spyro and Terrador on the threat of the dragon of fear which could sense the fear of the inhabitants of Warfang. In addition to that, he played on the role of Spyro as a purple dragon so that he would have more freedom than another sage, and could live as he wished with his friends, and his love. Terrador closed his eyes, making a thud of reflection.
"You score a point Hunter. It is true that having the purple dragon as a fire sage would definitely take away the fear that is beginning to inhabit people's hearts, and would protect us considerably from this threat. Which could relieve Spyro of several responsibilities, in addition to being helped by her friends, and by the young Flame."
He remained silent long enough to consider all other possibilities before continuing.
"What do you think about it, young dragon Spyro? Being able to be with your friends and being able to travel freely, while meeting a few conditions as a fire sage, seems fair enough to you compared to all that you have done for us so far here ?"
Spyro hesitated a lot and looked at his love first.
"At least we'll be together, and then, we're the order of Ignitus! It would be normal for you to take on this role. We'll get there together, my handsome!" Reassured Flame very enthusiastic since the idea that her love is guardian of the fire, without anything changing between Spyro and him, or with the three females dragons.
Then he looked at the three friends who smiled at him until they showed their fangs, and bobbed their heads up and down, followed by a buzz from Sparx that clearly said "Accept if you feel like it, we're all with you! ". Spyro felt a weight lift since they had returned to Warfang and smiled at Terrador.
"Master Terrador, I accept to represent Ignitus with dignity by becoming in my turn guardian of the fire!" replied Spyro very sure of himself.
Her friends and Flame gave big cheers to Spyro, while the purple dragon looked warmly at Hunter who had managed to find a compromise.
"So be it! After so much emotion, you surely need to recuperate a bit. Volteer, Cyril and I need to discuss the details of your young dragon decision. Hunter will show you and your friends your quarters." Terrador offered warmly who was happy to have been able to settle things with Spyro.
"Ha, that's a good idea!" Cynder replied, who was followed by Ashes.
"With pleasure master Terrador. Follow me friends" Hunter said to the group.
They left the central council chamber following Hunter who led the group of heroes to the central hallway. The architecture was the same as the round council hall, only there were some drawings along the walls. It apparently represented events from the major past, like Malefor's banishment to the spirit world, or other events that no one in the group knew about, not even Hunter. They saw an exit straight ahead, and the difference in brightness between the torches in the hallway and the bright sunlight made the outside look white.
The group of heroes closed their eyes as their lives got used to the outdoors, and a trickle of water was heard. They saw a large rounded garden with a small stream running around it. It was the inner garden of the temple. A paved path followed the walls, revealing an access to each side of this magnificent garden. Four stone bridges met in the center where a stretch of grass was visible with a huge tree in the middle. The place had apparently been spared by the war. A few birds chirped from the top of their nest, as well as Hunter's eagle who spotted the group. The small stretches of grass that separated the paved paths from the edge of the creek were covered in flowers with a few butterflies resting on them. Sparx began to hum and began to fly at full speed in the garden under the laughter of the group.
"Hahaha damn greedy Sparx!" laugh Ember accompanied by Ashes and Cynder.
"Not as greedy as me..." Spyro whispered, licking the neck of the red dragon who swallowed his saliva blushing.
"S-Spyro... It's not the time..." Flame stammered, blushing, hiding her face a little behind one of her wings.
"Not at the moment." Spyro snarled as he watched the pace of the red dragon which filled Flame's inner heat.
"The north wing of the temple is dedicated to guests of honor. There are several rooms available. Distribute as you wish. If you want food, there are agoras which distribute food at the entrance of the temple. temple, down the stairs." Hunter explained to the guests.
"Is there an economic system in your world?" Asked Ashes envisioning the gems on their islands and the various portals.
"Yes and no my friend. Warfang is a prosperous city, with many farms, cultures and craftsmen of all kinds. There is a system of free and supervised distribution between equality and equity depending on the case and family situations. For those who want more, an exchange system exists. For example, a blacksmith would like to have a particular pastry, or a classic in large quantities. This blacksmith goes to see a pastry chef and manages with to forge him molds or the like in exchange." Hunter explained.
"Wow, that's a great idea! Thanks to that, everyone has enough to live on. That way, there's no crime or anything else since everything is available up to a certain limit." Ember exclaimed, joining the conversation.
"Let's talk about reducing crime instead, because there are always people who stray from the right path." Hunter resumed to clarify the situation of the inhabitants of Warfang.
"It's like everywhere else. That's why you mentioned 'free and monitored distribution'." Cynder asked.
"Cynder indeed. Warfang is not entirely filled with light." Hunter replied.
The group chatted as they walked through the center of the beautiful garden. Ember stopped in front of the large tree in the middle of the garden, intrigued by its fruit.
"Hunter, what kind of tree is this? I don't know at all." Ember asks, sniffing a fruit that was level with her. They were round fruits, cyan-blue, slightly transparent with a kind of bright light in the middle, acting as pits.
"It has no name, and it's normal that you don't know it Ember. Here, we call it: The tree of destiny. It's the only one of its kind that exists. That's why that the temple was built around this unique tree. It is said that only pure souls can pick its fruits, which grow back when one of them is picked. If the pure soul who picked it eats it, a vision of his destiny that is close to his heart will be revealed to him."
The group paused looking at Ember who was intrigued by the appearance of her fruits, rather than their powers. She lifted a forepaw slightly but stopped looking at Hunter.
"I.... Can I try to take one?" She asked looking at Hunter, not daring to go further.
"If the tree judges that the feeling which animates you, and which pushes you to want to pick one of its fruits, is pure, the fruit will fall into your claws when you touch it, and another will grow back. Otherwise, you will have beautiful pull or slice, the fruit will remain at its tree." Hunter explained to the pink strap.
The looks of his friends and his little brother Flame were benevolent and Ember decided to direct his paw under one of the fruits. But as she made her gesture, it was the branch of the tree itself that moved to direct the fruit towards her paw and landed between her claws when the fruit touched her paw, as if the tree was alive. and conscious. The group was speechless, especially Hunter, and he needed a lot, as much as Cynder. A small general "woah" was heard.
"Outstanding !" Hunter exclaimed in great surprise as a small light appeared where the fruit was and a tiny burst of light occurred, revealing another fruit. Ember looked at Hunter weakly holding the fruit in her paw, like it was a bomb.
"H-Hunter... What does that mean??" Asked the panicked pink dragon.
"Don't be afraid my friend! The tree itself has decided to give you one of its fruits. This means that you have a very pure soul! Eat the fruit, and part of your destiny will be revealed to you in a brief vision."
Ember hesitated for a moment, then swallowed the little blue fruit of light that swallowed it in one bite. It tasted sweet like honey. A white mist invaded the vision of the dragon as well as a strong feeling. Her vision became clear again but she was no longer in the temple garden, but in a large room with 3 beds, large bookcases and a few tables with flowers placed on them. There was a window which she approached and saw part of a large city. She turned around when she saw out of the corner of her eye the carved door to this room open.
The person who had opened the door was a blue dragon with green highlights, the size and probably the age of Ember. He had kind of membranes on his cheeks and elbows, like a fish. Which meant it was probably a partially aquatic dragon since it was out of the water and had four legs and two wings. From what she knew, water dragons looked more like eels. She had never seen a terrestrial water dragon. His body was thin and slender with a slight musculature that stood out. The blue dragon had a hard look despite its magnificent crystalline eyes which were directed straight at the dragon. Seeing her, the dragon changed his gaze which became softer, even disturbed by the sight of Ember. The pink dragon herself felt a strong positive emotion invade her vis-à-vis the blue dragon.
Ember's vision was once again shrouded in a white mist and once dissipated, the dragon found herself in front of the large tree with the group watching her. In their vision of things, she had not moved and was staring straight ahead.
"Ember? Are you okay?" Her friend Ashes asked worriedly.
"Yes...Alright...Why?" replied Ember
"Because you're crying..." Cynder also worried.
"Ho, don't worry. Those are tears of joy. I... I think I saw the dragon of my dreams!" She laughed a little while wiping the tears that were falling from her eyes with one of her wings.
Her two friends, Cynder and Ashes jumped for joy towards the pink dragon, happy for their friend.
"How was he?! You heard his voice?! What were you doing?!" Asked Cynder.
"Tell us all! We all want to know! Don't miss any details!" Pursued Ashes.
"Calm down girls. I'll let you all know when we get to our room, I promise!" She laughed with joy as she looked at her two best friends.
The two dragons looked at each other, happy for the dragon because they knew what she was going through right now. Hunter smiled and continued to lead them through the garden to the entrance across from where the group had come.
