I think the real problem is Secondlife got a hold of them. lol Not saying it shouldn't have happened, but putting these awesome creatures into a "get one to make your own" setting leaves it open for people to do just that... And most of them have been turned into subs because of it. ^^;
Well, no, I think the thing is is that people have this idea of sergals should act a certain way, for better or worse.
Sergals are sapient, sentient beings, so they don't have an inherent mindset, they're like humans, they can act like anyone. Saying that all sergals are violent is just as flawed as saying all humans are violent. Now, when you get into the societies, then yes, the northern sergals of Clan Shigu are probably going to be more violent than the southern farmers from around Gold Ring, but that's because of their society, not because they are a sergal. Ya dig?
It gets to the point where sometimes some people think sergals have some sort of inner beast that has to be restrained for them to act like decent people like certain depictions of vampires or any shonen anime where a character has a demon inside them or something.
Anyways, it gets to the point where people say things like "Unlike other sergals, my character is not violent" or "Unlike other sergals, my character does whatever" which is usually describing part of their personality... when that has nothing to do with them being a sergal but what their life experiences were.
Though... This is really just one aspect of it all. A lot, and I mean a lot of people on FA just have no idea how to write a character. My jaw nearly hit the floor when a friend of mine once said that great characters have terrible childhoods.

Well, I write my own story of a sort set in the vilous universe if you're interested, you can find all the stuff on it on my FA page. Be warned I didn't draw before starting it so the first two or three chapters are pretty horrible looking, and, well, I've been really learning as I go so I think the more recent the chapters get the better they are.
Terrible childhoods can be done in an OK or even great manner, but it all depends on how it is presented and how it effects the character. There is no one best way to handle a terrible childhood but I think I can generally say most characters are effected by it in some way, be it they try to forget about it or has given them issues they have to deal with now or, well, absolutely any way as everyone's childhood effects them in some way. The difference is that some characters are written as having horrible childhoods purely for the sake of being "dark" or use these "terrible childhoods" as a crutch for how they act now, and that this shouldn't be the only thing that defines a character. This is what people are talking about when they talk about a complex character - there isn't just one thing that defines who they are, there's a lot of things that determine how they act and what they do.
This is not to say that someone is a slave to their past, and I'd like to note that not everything a character has gone through needs to be unique. Maybe they had a rough childhood but they still had friends in public school or an OK teenage to adult life, or maybe all their life sucked until they joined the military and found purpose or something, or if their life has been truly shitty all the way through maybe they're now desperately seeking some kind of companionship in any way they can. These are all a list of big maybe's and possibilities, these should not be viewed as anything more than examples and there are plenty, plenty more possibilities where those came from if people just think about it instead of relying on just the sentence of "they had a bad childhood" to define a character or otherwise justify their actions.
I have also not read your stuff so I am also not making any comment on any of your stuff with any of this as I don't know the way you've handled them and yeah. None of this is directed towards you, I'm just ranting in general.

Haha, no offense taken. The majority of my characters in-story may have horrible childhoods, but they all handle it differently. I think only two of my characters had it good as kids. lol And I'll definitely have a look at your stuff... I've got my prologue set as my featured and they're all linked together, if you care to read what's starting of my final draft. :3
Sometimes the point behind a Sergal is not how to draw it correctly, it's how the artist defines them upon paper.
Every artist has a different style and it is near impossible to replicate Micks own design.

Hmmm, interesting.. I have a friend on SL who has a southern sergal rendition and he always insisted that the southerns were taller, while I kept to the basic shape and just changed the skin texture to mimic a king cheetah and other animals (might post screenshots soon if I can avoid getting spotted by the manager of a club I work for >_> I'm supposed to be catching up on commissions, but rl work is making that hard). And here they actually look smaller than the northerns.. is this true to fact for your design or just saving space?

They are lovely creatures... And I'd have to say the mouth and the feet are my favorite parts. Especially those teeth... Unlike most badass creatures, they don't need a mouthful of daggers to look intimidating. Very well-balanced design. :3

I think I just might use this. I just might start drawing again. I haven't been working at the restaurant very much lately, so I guess I might start drawing again. But you know, I really do miss the oldschool sergals. Don't get me wrong, the newer versions are cool, but I prefer the oldschool version of sergals.
My sergal character does. That's how she was raised by her human owner(not master, she isn't a slave). Her

Okay, if you've got such a great imagination, why did you specifically use sergals instead of creating your own race for this? Why would you take someone else's creation, rip them from their established world setting, and put them in this situation? What is the reasoning behind using sergals here?
Um, because sergals are my favorite species? And excuse me, but I'm not the only one here who has used mick's sergal species for their own purposes. I have already asked mick if I could use his species in a story I had planned on writing. Oh, and also, if I'm not mistaken, many people like me are already using mick's species, their sergal characters, in situations completely opposite of what mick originally put his species in. I'm just another one of those people, I just have a slight twist to my own sergal character. So, I don't know what you're getting all worked up about.
That's exactly the problem. You're not using sergals because you like them, you're using them because you like their appearance. You've been giving me several signs that you don't know anything about them other than their appearance. There is no reason to use a sergal in a setting that isn't Vilous just like how there's no reason to have Klingons outside of Star Trek or Wookies outside of Star Wars. Just because you're not the only one who has used sergals for their own purposes doesn't mean it's a good idea, especially when everything is stripped from the race but their appearance, making them no longer sergals but a pale and in my opinion insulting imitation of them.
Having a character of a nonhuman race being treated poorly by humans and degraded by humans when the nonhuman race is at war with the humans is a trite escapist fantasy, none more basic than the being who wants to escape the terrible people that take care of them to get to the people they really "belong with." Prove everything that you have just stated about what I(not YOU) do and don't like about the sergal species. What else can you tell me about the plot of my story? Because as of right now, my story doesn't have a defined plot yet. All I know, is that this story I plan on writing, is about my sergal character, who(as far as SHE knows herslef) might be the only white or pure albino sergal on the planet she lives on(not Rain Silves or anyone else's character, and not on Vilous). It's about her, and her journey back to her people, where HUMANS are the pets, not sergals. Oh, and in my story, she is the only documented pet sergal in human history, on the planet she lives on.
So, are you still angry with me? Am I still infringing upon your beliefs? Am I rewriting every principle about the sergal species you know and accept? Am I forcing upon you that my story is the true sergal story? Am I forcing upon you that you MUST accept my story, and not mick's? Because from where I stand, it sounds to me like YOU are the one trying to tell me that I know nothing about the sergal species, and that I have reduced them to nothing but an animal, a household pet. To me, it sounds like you are trying to say that my story is BLASPHEMY, and that I should just erase everything that I believe about MY OWN GODDAMN STORY AND SERGAL CHARATER. You sir, are very wrong. Well, you've never heard of the red chapter, never heard of Rain's servants, don't know Mick is a female, and probably don't know about Roy, Zyn or even the main character from the story Lucien/Lusha Calcatto, so I can safely say you're here for the appearance and not the story given you have admitted you have never heard of the story.

You really are stupid. It's a common misconception among everyone that calls mick a guy. And so what if I've never read HER story? Big deal. That doesn't mean I know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about the sergal species. Creativity. That's what I'm using in my story, NOT mick's. AND honeslty, if you truly believe that I'm a sergal fan just because of the looks, and not the whole background story of the sergals, then I'm sorry for you. Just because you don't agree with the fact that I have created an alternate world and history for the sergals in my story, doesn't mean it's a disgrace and an insult to the ENTIRE sergal community. Well no, perhaps not the entire community but ripping off someone else's work and using bits and pieces of it without using the whole thing is, as I said, insulting in my opinion.

That was one of the things - I feel as though if they change everything about them, they shouldn't be called sergals. They can look the same, but I'd rather see them be called something else.

I have never said that you can't do your story, or anything of the sort. I have only been explaining why I don't favor what you have said. Everything that I have said here is opinion, specifically mine, and I do not have the ability nor a reason to try to stop you. I'm not going to like it, but you shouldn't care. Well no, perhaps not the entire community but ripping off someone else's work and using bits and pieces of it without using the whole thing is, as I said, insulting in my opinion.

Then why are you giving me shit about how I am "destroying the sergal society"? As far as I know, I'm just using what I envision the sergal society to be like in my world. And when the fuck did he have the right to flat out tell me that I'm not a sergal fan because I haven't read the story, or believe in the canon? Well, I'm sorry, but my imagination is my imagination. I've already contacted mick(a very long time ago) and she gave me the okay to go with my story. I'm not using any of her sergal characters, or anyone else's sergal character, except my own. And the guy above seems to think my ENTIRE story is a disgrace and degrades the sergal species just because ONE, just ONE character walks on all fours, and cannot speak because she was trained to behave like a family dog. She is not in any form a slave, just a sergal that was taken from her mother when she was just a baby, and taken under the care of her owners wife(notice I said OWNER, not MASTER). She raised her properly while the husband trained her to be like a dog. It's just one character out of a story of a few dozen of characters that the guy above thinks is a disgrace, therefore the entire story is a disgrace. It's just a story, and this is the internet.
