One of these days I need to do something with my "guardian angel that looks like a boogeyman" idea. It feels like perfect story material for someone to discover the monster in their closet/under their bed, be frightened, eventually get sort of used to it when it apparently doesn't do anything for the longest time other than be seen every now and then, until it helps the child in some manner, like facilitating escape from a nighttime house fire and the children realizes the being has their best interests at heart.
