My current distraction
F-1 and V-2 motor model kits 1/12 scale, so, in the case of the F-1, it's huge! Both are 3-D printed (not as one big chunk, lots of bits)

There's a few different ways to smooth PLA, but personally my printer was just really well dialed in from the factory and I've kept it good so my layer lines are smooth and clean, so I never even bother. Sometimes I have artifacting from supports or too aggressive overhang so I'll sand/file it, then heat smooth it over.
Never bothered printing with ABS, though I have also gotten CF Nylon through my Ender 3, so there's that!

Seeing this post encouraged me to post one of my old photographs where a real one is visible.

My father worked at Rocketdyne in the 70's as a metallurgist, helping with the testing of F-1 engine components. They had one that failed tests sitting on a plinth at the entrance to the plant for decades before it finally closed and was torn down. I think they gave it to the California Science Center. To think that five of those were at the business end of just one stage of a Saturn V boggles the mind.
The new motors are, I guess are based on the shuttle engines, though now run at about 500,000 lb thrust each, while the F-1 was 1,500,000 lb and a bit better with some of the later ones. I have the mould for the orginal Joe made Erma, have not tried to cast anything from it yet.
Hey Steve, haven't seen you online much and was worried about you. Having Chuck pass away recently has me wanting to reconnect with local folks like yourself.
I do a lot of 3D resin and FDM printing. I can appreciate the work that goes into those designs. I have been working with my laser for 1:160 th scale models myself.
