I got so fucking lucky with Entei on HeartGold. I was on my way to the Lake of Rage once, to talk to the Sibling Of The Day, when Entei popped out of nowhere all "LOL IMMA WREK UR SHIT". Just for the hell of it, I threw a Quick Ball, though he only had red health and no status.
