To be fair, while Leopold's reasonings for being a Guardian, might not be, let's say the most just, he's genuinely dedicated to the role, prepared for the all the risks, and most importantly its a decision that he himself made, without any influence from anyone else. As rude as Leopold might be, his desire to be Guardian, as well as his desire to accel in all the duties that come with it, are completely genuine.
Based on what we've been shown in Nigel's prologue story, he was effectively thrust into the role by his parents, and although this method seems to have worked for Nigel's ancestors as well as his parents, for whatever reason some part of him didn't quite turn out like those before him did, which would imply that deep down he wasn't doing it because he wanted too be a Guardian, but rather for validation from his parents, which isn't a bad thing, but it's made a abundantly it's something he has to want to do himself and he was deemed unworthy.
If Nigel did say anything about Leopold and he was there, assuming Leopold would be willing to give Nigel the time of day, Leopold would likely just break Nigel with words, I can't see him mincing his words with Nigel.

Those are excellent points. There is a possibility that all of Nigel's ancestors also wanted to become Guardians with him being the first not to really want it. As Rana said, there is a distinct possibility that Leo would end up being a bit more hands-on rather than just being blunt about Nigel's antics.
Yeah the Tree herself said he has everything he needs to be a good Guardian, he just needed to find his own reason to be one, and not his parents' wish. But she also said she hopes he notices it before it's too late, which shows he's a bit too easily corruptible. After all if the rejection alone made him blame her instead of his parents, what guarantees how much worst would be if Rah'Jan did to him the same he did to Lynus' grandson?
That would require sufficient self awareness and the ability to look at things from other people's perspective, aka empathy.
Nigel is too miserable to do that yet, and his bad behaviour is only fueling his misery, which in all honesty is what he desires atm.
People despise change. Nigel is bitter and angry, but this is all he knows now, change won't come easy to him.

Probably cause he's not worth it or no one thinks he's important enough to go after, considering what's been happening with the chaos and whatnot, he'd be a low priority all things considered.
Plus with how his attitude is, I doubt anyone would want to even associate him.

Let's also hope he doesn't find supportive chaotic father figure. If someone gets in his head like that, manipulating him will be cinch. He might've been groomed to be a guardian not out of his own volition, don't think that Life could've been worse of this. Chili got a new family even though she did do something wrong, accident but still. Nigel lost everything, just because he was raised to be something, and someone deemed him not good enough. He never got to choose.
This story is leeping me on my toes. I love it. Good story has conflict. And even though I am critical of some characters actions, I wouldn't wanna change a thing.

Yeah, I agree that Nigel had it rough from the begining, and was given barely any choice or guidance, he didn't knew better.
Though (it's always up to debate), he had a choice to ask for help, but instead he chose to lash out and close his heart.
Was it outright his fault?
Not really, but the fact that he initially "chose violence" stays the same.
There's plenty of such cases both in fiction and real life.
People say that they had no choice, but there's still at least polar opposite.
Can a person see it or accept it given the circumstances?
Depends on a person.
I'm interested how far that will bring Nigel.

Well. We know children are completely logical and responsible creatures x3 what happens if you take something nice from a kid? They lose their shit.
But well. I hope someone helps Nigel go through all this. At some point he needs to own up to his actions. It will be hard for him for a looong time at this rate.

Oh yeah, I remember myself when I was a kid. x3
Still, it was discussed in the comments when it all happened, which torn the readers in two sides.
My take on what happened - ToL can't or won't help, unless the person that needs help is willing/asking for help/aknowleges they need it (Mira being exception, since she was a baby).
Nigel didn't ask for help, he didn't think at all, and just pushed her away.
Again, can't really blame him for that, but that was a choice, even if not fully conscious.
The question is - what should happen to put Nigel in a position of aknowleging that he has a fucked up life and need something to change?
What will force him to do a 180° over, and join the band as a new Guardian, that he should've been from the start, but didn't have his heart in the right place?

Give him the option to leave later and find out what he can become? When he's more mature and realize he isn't a droid. Why deal in absolute yes or no? Well there is probably some background info on that, probably something about how this small detail can make one more suspectible for chaos... Then again we saw one rabbit man get turned with one round of look into my eyes. And well no person is perfect, not even a deity and no choice pleases everyone, inside and outside the world. Maybe ToL could've handled it better but let's be honest. She also has a lot on her plate, and her plate is the size of the world. No matter how good ones intention when wielding power, and building an army, and that IS what she does. Someone will get the short straw in your own side too.
Indeed you are right.
Also, speaking about the Jakalope warior that got corrupted - many often forget that being phisicaly strong and having a strong will ain't always enough against deepest tempations and illogical or very well structured, but wrong at the core, ideas.
Not to mention, we don't know what exactly Rah'Jan showed to him.
As it was speculated - he could've shown only a fraction of truth, not giving a full picture, just to convert Jakalope to his ranks.
Unless a person is flexible in accepting new views and analyse them from all points, it doesn't matter how strong their will or faith is - it can be broken.
Just as with a well tempered sword - gotta find a right spot to strike and shatted it in one blow.

...I get the feeling Nigel's Quip aimed at Miralle was from Leopold at one point or the other...
That being said, It would likely have been from Leopold in his younger years, rather than now... Then again, Miralle is still a ball of Chaotic energy that always gets yeeted at the Darkness...

I'm starting to be really curious as to what will finally bring Nigel around. I've said before I think he a little too far gone. Too mean-spirited and filled with hate and bitterness. Something that could convince him to help the Tree would have to be, well, probably really big and really really bad.
For him to change his heart now, he should witness something really awful and spirit shattering.
Something that will kick him off a high piedestal of bitterness and thorns, to finally look around with clear sight and make a decidion to turn his life 180°.
As I wrote above - even through all odds and negative circumstances, he made a choice as a kid and he's carrying it through his life, no matter how wrong that choice is to him, gripping into it, cuz he has nothing else left to rely on, and loosing that painful, bitter ground would leave him broken and lost.
It takes alot of courage and inner power to get back from your knees, when it feels like the world's against you..
Really curious how it will pan out.

Even if Nigel is a jerk as usual, and even if what he's doing is projecting his failure onto others because of his bad parenting, Miralle and Chili's reaction to his words proves that he's right about them in a way. However, as I said before, I hope that Nigel can find a path that leads him in the right direction; for his own good.
