Thazel Springwell, a Kentar-Sagittar and younger brother of Bevlin Springwell, grew up fascinated with the usual tales of heroism and knightly valor. But rather than losing sight of those ideals, he pursued them even after his coming of age, seeking to become a squire (and someday a knight) in the Order of the Vermilion Rings, one of his homeland's oldest orders, dating back to the first foundations of peaceful cooperation between the sagittars and the other races of Orotell. He served with Lady Vakasios, a kind but stern nephling knight-commander, protecting the land and its citizens. Years later, Lady Vakasios and Thazel were with the Eighth Eastern Expedition when they went forth to push back the monstrous hordes encroaching on the good peoples of Orotell.
You know, the disaster that came to be known as Urukinn's Lament? That one. Thazel was one of those who survived that fiasco, though ultimately not in one piece. He was captured and tortured for information, and then (seeing as he was only a squire) for sport, his arms maimed while he was made to serve as a beast of burden (a barbaric practice harkening back to centuries ago, when cruel warlords sought to pacify and humiliate their sagittar captives).
It was a daring band of adventurers, hired in part by his sister Bevlin, that found the camp and rescued Thazel and his fellow captives (and just as importantly, brought back word that it was the Umbral Empire, not the Taurus Reach, responsible for the uptick in monster attacks). His testimony served to avert a good deal of unjust violence against the local taurus population.
Unfortunately, this was also the end of his service in the Order. Though he was dubbed a knight upon his return home, Thazel was also dismissed from active battlefield service (though at least given a respectable pension). The sad truth was that, while there were duties he was still physically capable of performing, the stigma of the barbaric maiming of sagittars was such that the Order could not risk even the appearance of that impropriety. Even outside the Order, Thazel still has to wear a red tassel earring to signify his free status, lest any employers he might have take umbrage for "enslaving" him.
What's an armless sagittar survivor to do now?
Note to any artists I use for this character: the arrows sticking out are not permanent, and the scars don't have to be exact.
