The (Tenuous) Promise of Safety [Old-World-Bird]

"The sky held no restraint from overwhelming gloom. Quicksilver slivers pierced the night through pinpricks, seeping behind decaying branches, and lit dimly beyond the damp path from whence the wanderer came.
Knotted woods and tangled thorny brushes lurked close to the route; petrichor and charring oils clogged the air. Leaves rustled as skittering creatures chased after prey and fled from predators.
In the distance, the compacted dirt that lay beneath the wanderer's claws began to trail off into the dark, uncharted land.
The torch would not be needed for much longer: after all, the creature it was meant for was not afraid of engaging interlopers within its own territory..."
Many thanks to
Old-World-Bird for this piece as part of their Inktober commissions. It captures a feeling that is difficult to describe and nostalgia that would be equally inexplicable.
Feel free to visit their commissions page (or their post of this) and give them some positive attention.
