So why do female spotted hyenas have “cucumbers?” No one really knows for sure. Some researchers think it’s due to the high amounts of
testosterone in the bodies of sheyenas, making them highly aggressive and better able to compete for more food. But giving them androgen blockers had no effect on the cubs. Some suggest it developed as a way to make it difficult to tell the males from the females, in order to protect the cubs...but hyenas go by smell. Other theories credit hyenas with far too much ability to consciously affect their own anatomy.
