The character design practice back from the Filmation days. i had started at Ruby-Spears doing models, but at Fimation i had been doing 99.9% layouts (which is sort of grunt-work on most TV shows) - i got to do some model work there and was working on trying to improve my chops to switch departments. A couple years later i was doing models full time at Hanna-Barbera, so it was a good thing that i had been doing some practice before that.
It's v2 because the original scan had the two gradient frames, but i pit in the colours inside and outside the frames a couple days ago.

Tiger girl works much better as an animation model - simpler design = fewer lines = easier to animate on a TV show budget.
Bunny girl might have worked as a comic book design, but a lot of lines and areas would have to be simplified; her outfit was sort of Velma inspired x manga ... Velma's actual design is very simple (in a good way). The early day character designers were geniuses at creating attractive simple designs.

The tiger gal reminds me of a cross between Sonic style and
susanvancamp ...

The Tigrrl is almost 30-second commercial simple. To me, she actually looks more late 1970s than '80s, but the fuzzy boots make it work. And no, I'm not particularly proud of what I was doing back in '87.
The Bnuuy girl is as you described her above; a little more than comic book complex ("Simplify, simplify").
I wonder if a lot of web comic artists burn out early because their character designs are too busy? Burn off an afternoon drawing an outfit once?

Their studios were wise enough to wind them up and let them go. I've been studying Bernie Wrightson lately; he seemed to be a workaholic with a home studio (Sleep? What's that?). Since it was comic book work he didn't have to worry about simplifying art for the Ink & Paint ladies, so the publishers could wait until he delivered a pile of work.
I have a big book on Rand Holmes (Harold Hedd, et alia) and he seemed to be the same sort... when it suited him. I want start reading it but I have a ton of other junk in my queue.

Dismissing simple animation style can be be a mistake. When i was at HB i had acess to all the earlier series development art and there was Alex Toth, Iwo Takamoto, and on and on - Toth you probely know from 70's DC horror comics - he and Doug Wildey designed Johnny Quest - a series who simple and elegant style went on to influence generations of artists. They were 26 minute long stories intended to create a zap of wonder that would bring kids back next Saturday. They were master artists. Hacks did the 30-second commercials. As Mark Twain said, it's the difference between the lightning and the lightning-bug.
These were drawn just as "Teen Age Mutant Turtles" were coming out ... and are two different styles of cartooning a late teen to twenty-something character. The current styles varied between Masters Of The Universe, Captain Planet, and Smufs.
i eventually worked on all three of those series.
aimed at a pre-teen to teen audience
adventure magic combat
same as cave paintings and rock carvings.
