It wasn't everyday that Lottie struggled to break a curse. She was adept at her job, a skill and trait that had been honed with many years of teaching. Her family had passed down these abilities and then the matrons of the families took the time to make sure the skill was truly learned. After all, dealing with cursed objects was a truly dangerous job and if one was not careful they would end up in a bad situation. Honestly, the lass often found herself on the end of something she blundered but none as deadly as the fabled Soul Mirror. Many a women in Lottie's family had tried to break the curse, to free the spirits that it had consumed, trapping for eternity. None has succeeded. It was such a daunting task and many of Lottie's family had been sucked within the crystalline surface. The current Matron had locked the mirror away, a lost cause. Some things just couldn't be fixed. Protected and locked away, never to see the light of day again. That was the matrons plan at least. However like all good plans, something always went awry.
Lottie took possession of the home, the shop and all the surrounding areas through the last will of her Great Grandmother. She had passed and with it Lottie found herself the new Owner of not only those things but all possessions within. A small letter left detailing what could be found, what was stored, what was protected ect. Lottie had a very inquisitive nature and could never leave well enough alone. So when she got to the parts of the note that demanded the mirror be left alone the cat hybrid did not listen. She needed to fix it, this urge within telling her she could do it.
It just so happened to be All Hallows Night, the community out spreading festivities regardless of the weather that raged outside. Most activities had moved indoors. The night not to be ruined. Lottie, who had planned to join them decided to stay in. She just could not shake this need, this desire to fix the wrongs of the past, to break the curse. She was born for this, trained for this and she would not fail.
A lot of work went into preparing her space, the sound of the rain as it hit the balcony making her ears twitch. The whistling of the wind through the trees followed by the crack of thunder and a flash of light. It certainly set a mood. Lottie had read all the previous accounts about breaking this curse and had learned a few do and donts for sure. For example, not to look into the mirror when casting lest you lose yourself. She positioned the mirror, as well as her own spell book, passed down for generations. Candles set about because the power had flickered recently, sending her into darkness.
A shiver raced down the lass's spine before she began the incantation. Her grimoire lit up moments before her eyes did. The words for the protection spell easily falling from her lips. The flow of power surrounding Lottie filled her, taking over until she brimmed with it. As this happened she was unaware of the presence within the mirror. The presence that begged, pleaded for freedom. She had once fallen into the trap, the curse taking her life from her and trapping her soul within. It craved freedom, it craved to live again. Fists slammed against the mirror from the other side, begging Lottie to be careful. She wanted freedom but not at the cost of another being locked away for eternity. To many had come and gone.
Lottie felt the presence, her hair standing up along her arms but it was to late to stop now. The power in her waited, coiled like a snake to strike. Soon, it would be time. Would Lottie succeed, would she free the souls? Or would she lose her own soul, a husk left behind.
I hope yall enjoyed a little bit of a Spooky story from Lottie's Journey to who she is now. I would love to see how you guys think this ended. If you took the time to read the work I appreciate it. It means so much to me that you had the time to do . Thank you!
