Oy. Their guardian yokai isn't just a little suspicious, he's straight out paranoid. If you've fought a war, maybe it's understandable, but still - he couldn't possibly have it more wrong.

Because this makes me remember a scene of a game i played a time ago
The heroes was informed a kindom had a demon infiltrated but when they go result it was the second hand soi this one said he was "informed" about the demons disguides as your team and wanted to caused internal damage saying the kindom had infiltrated demons XD
