This is the recipe off the Clabber Girl baking powder can.
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/3 cup shortening (I used butter-flavored shortening)
3/4 cup milk or buttermilk
1 tsp soft butter
Sift dry ingredients together into a bowl
Cut in shortening with a pastry cutter (I throw the shortening in the freezer for 30-45 minutes before using to keep it firm) till it's pea-sized
Add milk and stir with a fork till the mix pulls away from the side of the bowl (both times I've made this I've had to add more milk to get the right consistency)
Turn onto a floured surface and knead 5-7 times (I've found if you over-knead they will be flat after baking) and roll out to 1/2 to 3/4 inch and cut with biscuit cutter (I used 2 1/2 inch one ((do not twist the cutter when using, it'll make the sides crimp and not rise well when baking))
place on cookie sheet and brush with softened butter
Bake for 11-15 minutes till golden brown (keep an eye on them, my oven only took 10 minutes) and enjoy

It's funny reading your discretion reminded me of Grandma B and her making biscuits... nothing was measured, it was all by eye. Then again if you'd made as many servings of biscuits as she had over the years you knew what things looked like in the bowl before you got started.
Thanks for posting this and bringing back long forgotten memories.

You know, most electric ovens have one burner that has a vent from the oven. It's handy to take a pyrex measuring cup there with about half a stick of butter over it. That way when the biscuits are just about ready to take out, you can pull them out and brush the melted butter over it.
