When I was little, the daughter of some lifelong family friends had one of those kinds of big-eyed, sad cubby pics: a sittiing puppy, holding up a limp paw, a tear in its eye.
Its tracks in the sand/snow show it had managed to make it to you, limping from a freshly burned out cottage in the background, under a black sky.
I remember clearly breaking down and crying terribly when I studied that pic. It still pulls at my heart, all these decades later.
