Long shot: Maybe the symbiotes are his power? Maybe they're made from a mix of his own powers and another device to make them and whenever the drones use their symbiote healing it puts strain on Buns. Overuse of the symbiotes whether through using it to stimulate themselves or in combat puts some nasty strains on Buns' powers.

Confirmed Buns' has super powers as well and I would find it hilarious if he was even training with the League but his powers were downgraded to being useless and this is in a way a bit of petty revenge.

But as much as he is a scheming megalomaniac his could not be psychic. He is the physical guy and iirc from before the comic he can manipulate latex. So he strained himself the first time manipulating the suit of the new guard and the coughing of blood in the control room was cause he lost control over Josh's latex symbiote when the bear forced his will over it and was trying to control it against Frostbite.

Might also be why Josh and Holt currently have the sex of their lives as Buns had to relinquish his control over their symbiotes to not kill himself. Cause he never gave the unlocking signal for their null buldges.

Suddenly Mr Bun's coughing blood makes more sense and makes me suspect he has a Psychic power to dominate people, the Symbiots are a tool for him to focus this power, but he's been overdoing it with creating too many Symbiots.
