The redirection rule actually doesn't exist any longer. When they released the 2018 Dominaria set, they introduced the text "any target" which allowed damage spells and abilities to target planeswalkers directly, eliminating the need for the redirect rule.
A lot of old cards were oracle changed to "any target" or "target player or planeswalker" so that they could retain their intended functionality after that change.

Nothing wrong with not keeping up with the rules. There were more than a few changes that occurred at the time too, like making all Planeswalkers legendary so that they can be subject to the legends rule like any other permanent type rather than the old rule that a player could only have one planeswalker of the same character.
