This is a song I wrote and recorded in 1990. I used to be a musician in the loosest sense of the word. My sensibilities were usually based on Queen or eighties Genesis, and after a while I realized that kind of music wasn't tearing up the charts and lost interest.
This is the "best" thing I ever created. "Vocals" are mine. Keys, synth bass and drum program is all mine. A friend played guitar. I wish I'd listened to him and had him solo over the final coda.
Before clicking... realize it's me wailing over a "Too Much Time on My Hands"-style bass riff. Production's trebly and hissy because it was done on old Tascam Porta05 (ah, days of old). Even as such I still like it.

This brings back memories! I remember the first time I got my hands on a Tascam Portastudio, circa '84; it was an absolutely magical machine. All my stuff came out at approximately this level of fidelity, too. No matter how the eq knobs got turned, it never yielded anything resembling a natural result. But it didn't matter. It was multitrack recording in a box! How cool was that?!
You are WAY, WAY better as a musician than I ever was as a cartoonist. Unfortunately, because of my crappy cartooning, that's hardly a compliment, so I'd better come up with a more positive way to put it!

Oh, absolutely. I lusted after a four-track since I started playing music, and when I finally got one, it was manna from heaven. ($399. I remember the price because I successfully HAGGLED it down!) I ended up using it literally to death. I'm not sure what happened to it.
I think my EQ knobs BROKE OFF at one point, too. Technology!
And thanks so much. I feel immensely flattered and humbled. :)

Every time I hear someone's recorded music with all sorts of instrumentation and (most likely) multi-track recording, it boggles my mind somewhat because I haven't got the foggiest notion how something like that is done. (Meaning: how one records and syncs up separate recordings to make it sound like a complete whole.)
It's easier than it looks. You basically record each part, then while listening to the part, you record the next one, and so on and so on and so on. Occasionally you'll want to mix out guide parts like metronome "clicks" (say, for instance, a solo piano bit in a full band song).
It's trickier on a four track recorder (like I had) because you have only four tracks to work with. The first track will be drums, the second track will be bass, and the third track will be keyboards, for instance. To get "more" tracks, you then record all those tracks onto the fourth track for a "mini-mix", which frees up the first three tracks for more instrumentation. It was quite fun at the time... the difficulty was mostly getting a good take because I was a sloppy keyboard player. :)

Why do I get the feeling this would be the opening theme song to the 1980's version of the Newshounds cartoon? I can see it already- reporters chasing bad guys with cameras and mics, dodging thrown pies and other stuff, following the villain in his biplane while the KPET crew pursues in their newsvan over a rolling scene of rainbows.
Look out, Ferris!
The news van crashes into the world's largest doggie fire hydrant, but the villain is caught anyways through some accident.
The song just fits nicely with that mental image.

Hey, at least you weren't growling/screaming (that's what I did back then). And anyway, I think it's more important to put feeling into a performance than doing a technically near-perfect run-through while staying in your comfort zone. I actually like the ending as it is, though perhaps a fade-out would be nice. I must say I missed some lyrics, so it would be cool if you could write them out. Either way, pretty song. :3
Thanks. :) Here they are:
---
Say what you want, do what you wanna do
Anything will help
Someone's got a bad attitude and it's not myself
Or someone else
It's you, and you, and you will never work it out.
All I need to know is why I'm made to feel so wrong.
All I need to know is why this goes on and on.
We never speak, we never communicate.
And you call yourself a friend.
When it comes to compromises, it's always me who has to bend,
Again and again.
So don't ever flatter yourself!
(chorus)
We can work it out if only we'd give it a try
If we actually talked it over, we'd know how and why,
But it won't ever happen, it goes against your grain.
Some people delight in giving other people pain.
(chorus)
