Sometimes inspiration just drops out of nowhere, as I recently learned about a bird called the Hoopoe. Very vibrant and dynamic coloration! I love the crest and black and white banding on the wings and tail.
One thing led to another, artists worked their magic and voila! Hoopoe gryphon.
