Did you know that when Illithids grow from tadpole to adult, they take a host of some other organism, turning their insides into that of an Illithid, and then transforming their outer appearance? Then when there's a disturbance in the growth process, the Illithid can be trapped with the outer looks of their host, but still have the craving for brains, in which they often carve into their victim's skull with a knife.
