Kristina was growing worried. It wasn't like the dashing leader of the Wyvern riders to stand her up without sending a message, and no alarms joined the light chiming of the Dark Bell. Had she misremembered the time or place? That seemed unlikely, because, while Rozera was never quite as precise and meticulous as her lover, the one appointment she never missed was their nocturnal trysts, when Rozera would sneak out of the aviary and Kristina would leave her small cottage and the pair would enjoy a picnic in one of the lesser used towers on the old curtain wall. She paced the room, the stone floor growing colder under her bare feet.
Had Rozera forgotten their date after so long away? It seemed impossible. More likely, the knight had been waylaid along her way, perhaps by one of Anjela's schemes or Vivienne's enthusiastic conversations, more effective than any cage in trapping someone in a room. She had waited too long, and she pushed open the door, silently walking out into the moonlight as a howl was carried over the Maidensbay. It seemed close, but the bay had a way of making sounds seem more near or far than they truly were. Another howl answered the first, and Kris, once again remarking on how close they sounded, pushed the thought away as she entered the rooms above the kitchen. Rozera would have to pass through them, and might have stopped for wine or snacks, the perfect place for an ambush by her meddling friends.
Kristina made her way across the wooden floors, her footfalls silent as she descended. The alchemical lights, in their heart shaped crystal containers, shimmered with silver light, casting shadows in the dark room. Nothing stirred, and yet, Kris could feel her hair standing up on end. She wasn't alone...
