TF Drive Page 1: The Cop did Nothing
The story beings!
Yes, these events happened EXACTLY like this! And I never found where the hat fell to!
Not shown: My little sister trying to push past me to be the first into the building (she probably wouldn't have taken getting slingshotted that well)
The title refers to the fact that this was my first time going to a school with actual police presence (old school had come up with the role of "security guy" in the 50s [Fire Marshal got an upgrade] who was pretty much just a janitor with a walkie-talkie, but it was enough for the mayor's office to consider we didn't "need" police presence)
(Disclaimer: you couldn't get Pokémon hats back then, I've drawn Pokémon because I couldn't remember the design but remember it was something about as popular as Pokémon)

The dichotomy between "internal security" and "guarded by police" is truly fascinating to me; I'd been at 3 other schools, each handling security internally, and you could tell by the school's "culture" how it had evolved: in one, it was a doorman, in another, it was the spotter that helped the school busses park! (bus parking was on the edge of a cliff so you kinda needed it)
I couldn't get anyone from the school to do anything about anyone harassing me. Especially the little kid harassing me my senior year. When he tried to choke me while eating, and I chased him across the entire campus and grabbed him, the "campus security" person's solution was "Now both apologize to each other." I refused.
The kid didn't stop until I physically beat the crap out of him, after nine weeks of him pulling this. After he stole my stuff and refused to return it, and the teacher refused to get involved because "I didn't see it happen, so it's your word against his." Except he was loudly bragging about how he stole it, and the teacher still refused to act. He deleted the entire contents of my graphing calculator, including the Tetris game I'd written from scratch, and so that was the last straw.
And then near the end of the year, Columbine happened, and so the administration had two armed police officers drag me out of a classroom. They brought me in a windowless room to have the school President interrogate me about any potential plans I might have. And the school demanded all security personnel harass me daily for the rest of the year.
...I do not have a high opinion of high school or campus officials or school security. >.>

Columbine definitely factored into my decision not to raise a big stink that day. It wasn't being labeled as a criminal threat that worried me, it was expulsion (it had been hard enough to find this school and transfer our records to it --they had us fill out questionnaires which caused them to threaten not to take us because we were "too honest"-- I didn't want to go through that again!)
This particular kid never bothered me again, directly. I'm pretty sure he confused me for someone else (though I could swear I was hit 3 weeks later with the same slingshot by another hand)
Old school's "security guy" would've taken him to his teacher and let her handle him, which would probably have meant escorting him off the "playground" and not letting him back in until she said so. Yes, he had that power and was not afraid to use it!

I got in that fight early in the year, around the end of the first quarter, and Columbine happened later. But I was "the shy quiet kid who liked computers and video games that everyone picks on", so either the administration took initiative on something for once, or someone really did spread a rumor I had an "enemies list" and was making plans. It was all complete fabrication, my goal was to keep my head down, "do my time", and get out so I never had to see a single one of those wretched monsters again.
The interrogation was pretty worthless. "If you tell me the truth, I will believe you. Do you have an enemies list?"
"What? No!" It was the truth.
"I don't believe you!" And he started angrily going through my backpack, examining every single piece of paper and questioning me about anything he didn't like. Like the "Your kid has bad grades" slip I was supposed to bring home and have my parents sign, but never did (and never got in any kind of trouble for ignoring). I was too lazy to clear anything out, so he had an entire year's worth of crap, only got about a quarter of the way through it, before the last bell rang and I needed to catch a bus home. He decided against having me detained and dealing with my parents, I suppose.
