I reread the whole thing about a month ago, and I'm not sure when he came to the realization that his body wasn't with him and floating around, we now know literally, somewhere out there. Maybe when he was stuck in the jar, I dunno.
I'm leaning a bit towards he never did, right up until he saw it on the beach, and right now he's in a very large state of denial that has mostly happened off screen.
Or, he just has no Fs to give and he's like. Oh cool. Body is back. And now I have pet flies that will never leave me.

Roko was kind of an antihero to begin with and he already was effectively a lich. The OG D&D liches actually stored their souls in jars, and they occupy corpses. I don't blame Saida and Brand for being freaked out - Saida especially. She'd probably know a lot about magic-wielding yōkai and instantly know just how far Roko has fallen. He may not be in denial. He may well have just went all the way evil.
Brand has no such knowledge, but he's not dumb. He'd take one look at that THING and is probably thinking, (OMG that looks just like AYAL).

I got the impression initially he was practically a kistune if not actually (I don't know how much Virmir is sticking to the actual lore and mythos of all these or using them as a guideline and as easy imagery for readers to grasp right off) , especially with the shapeshifting, and the prankstering and all that. The eyestone unmores their spirits from their bodies, transfers the two and leaves Roko loose. The special effect of the transfer scene implies to me if there was a fourth person there Roko's spirit would have inhabited their body, and they would be inside the fox with, I assume the fox bod's inherent shapeshifting (I'll get to that in a second) the way Brand can use the Quetz magical horn. So I take it that Roko is now, effectively, a disembodied spirit. And the body without a spirit is either essentially dead at the moment, or died (and I mean in the sense of no more metabolism going on) from the fall and drowned in the ocean some time since that initial split and finding it. The look on Brand after nosing the Kitsune fox body, is not one that says, 'oh he's just knocked out.'
I don't know much about liches other than the basics of them, and again I don't know how much Virmir is using those rules. I don't think Roko is trending any way other than he's just impulsive, and has always been that way to an annoying degree.
One thing I am curious about, is that if he had recognized and dove back into his body right from the start, would it essentially be a reanimated corpse, just a very fresh one, or would Roko be made whole again and be just like normal. My guess is, if he is going to be able to shapeshift again is going to be an indicator. And is the spirit going to be able to draw some sort of sustenance from it that's implied in the whole tree thing a few pages ago, or is he just animating a new, very smelly body compared to the balloon and jar from earlier.
So I guess I'm modeling this as, is Roko an astral projection, that missed it's moment to return to the body, or did he just die back then and needs some kind of special magic to undo all that before the reapers finally catch up with him.

This was really stupid and greedy on Roko's part (which isn't a surprise anymore). In my opinion, Roko's soul living inside of his decaying body is way worse than Roko's soul living inside of a balloon, a jar, or not inside anything and being chased by reapers in the possess. I guess Roko will do anything to avoid being a fat rounded balloon and explodes by eating too much souls at once, lol, XD.
It looks like to me based on Roko's current form, it is not going to be too long before Roko's body disintegrates which will cause Roko to look for another item to live inside anyway. Brand might wanna bring Roko's balloon disguise or an extra jar just inside Roko's body disintegrates completely...... which is a huge chance of that happening in my opinion, lol. XD
(Virmir is really good at horror art. ^^ )
I can't wait to see how Roko's greediness will come back to haunt him. XD

I wouldn't say it's greedy of him to want his own body back. My first thought was he must be in denial, but then I remembered there is an in universe method of bringing the dead back to life. They still most likely need the orb to make it work. Bones sink, by the way. I think they found a way to reach the orb.
It helps he's a youkai, not a mortal creature. He doesn't die like ordinary mortals, but his True Form's still visible to the Reapers. And they're gonna keep trying to send him to the Other Place with all the other spirits.
He needs a vessel when in the mortal world and apparently a rotting corpse is better than a balloon animal to him. Proooobably not to everyone else, though.

I wouldn't say it's greedy of him to want his body back. I say that the approach he is taking to get it back is greedy by him abandoning his best body he can live in for now (which is his balloon body) for him living inside of his decaying body before it could get fixed while the decaying body is affecting his mind in a negative way..... if that makes sense?
This is definitely a new low for Roko!!! In my opinion, Roko's soul living inside of his decaying body is way worse than Roko's soul living inside of a balloon, a jar, or not inside anything and being chased by reapers in the possess.
I bet if Roko's body decays completely, that he wishes that he would still be living inside his balloon disguise or inside of a jar.
I wonder if Roko is in his current decaying body, can he even digest the souls that he will try to eat in the future and stop his hunger for eating souls? Probably not for both. Because it looks like to me based on the current form, it is not going to be too long before Roko's body disintegrates which will cause Roko to look for another item to live inside anyway. Brand might wanna bring Roko's balloon disguise or an extra jar just inside Roko's body disintegrates completely...... which is a huge chance of that happening in my opinion, lol. XD
This is a very different approach that I thought it had a chance of happening. I can't wait to see how Roko's greediness will come back to haunt him. So proud of you! Thanks for posting! Seeing your comics always makes my day better. So proud of you and keep up the awesome job, Virmir! ^^
