For KRAM this month I did a remake / tribute of the famous Krystal pinup render that Rare put out prior to the release of Star Fox Adventures. I remember first seeing it in an issue of Nintendo Power 20 some odd years ago. A lot of boys became men when that issue came out!
When I did the Krystal meet and greet pic, I did a fairly quick digital painting that appeared on the posted that Jake was getting signed. I really wanted to do a more finished version that I could post separately. It took me a long time to get around to it and I actually ended up more or less redoing the whole thing at some point because I wasn't satisfied with how it was turning out. I'm really happy with how the final piece turned out and I got to do some experimentation with changing up my style a little bit. I have quite a lot of nostalgia for this pose, and I hope you all enjoy my spin on it now that you can see the full image as I imagined it.

Rare clearly knew what was going to happen when they released that Krystal pinup, and it worked. In hindsight, it felt a bit like false advertising since Krystal was only playable for the first 10 minutes of the game, loses her staff, and is held captive for the rest of the game. On the other hand, sheβs still one of the best video game furry waifus ever.
Man, if this is based on official artwork, it's no wonder she ended up being featured in oceans and oceans of smut. You've done such a beautiful job with her, though, and the detail on her armor, such as it is, is beautifully done. I love the sly, knowing smile on her face as well, and the little bit of gold paint on her claws. It turned out amazing, and while I never played the games, I do enjoy seeing art of the cute blue vixen!
Also, I just noticed the straps on her shoulder pads going under her armpits and attached to the choker for stabilizing. Considering they just kind of magically stick to her shoulders in the original game, that is exquisite attention to detail that elevates this artwork to a whole new level.
Not to mention the loving detail on the tattoos and engravings and everything else.

I remember when Star Fox Adventures first released, how I went from regarding Krystal with curiosity to admiring her like so many others. After seeing some fanart in Nintendo Power of Fox with a vixen that I in hindsight strongly suspect was Fara Phoenix, I was taken by the idea of Fox having a love interest, and then this fascinating blue vixen struts in and (ahem) crystallizes herself in that role. I've been a Fox/Krystal fan as well as a fan of Krystal in general since.
I do wish she got to play a more active role in her debut title. I would have had her be captured by the SharpClaw early on, then rescued by Fox and Tricky maybe 10-15% of the way into the game, giving her and Fox a chance to meet early and begin developing their relationship. Would have been interesting to see their personalities clash at points, with Fox being a more jaded realist focused on getting the job done and getting paid while Krystal would be an idealist and optimist focused on helping save the planet from suffering the same fate as her own. Inevitably, Krystal's spirit would be all but crushed at some point by an act of betrayal or a major setback, and Fox would find the compassion within him to reassure Krystal and help renew her hope, perhaps rediscovering some of the spirit he once had when he became the new leader of Star Fox years prior. The two would bond, leading to a romance blossoming between them and of course to Krystal joining Star Fox proper.

They clearly knew exactly what they were doing, but I wonder if anyone realized quite the extent she'd be loved over the years...
Really though, makes me so damn happy that she still is after all this time! Truly gorgeous take on this legendary piece of anthro history. π
