CHAPTER 25
That afternoon, Esteban stayed with Natany for a long time in the hospital. After the meeting with Joseph, he was not in the mood to go back to work. He called his boss Chakat Serenity and asked hym for the afternoon off. After leaving the room, he observed Regthar and Avik in the same room, but far apart from each other. Regthar only talked to Natany's colleagues, while Avik did it to Dolkun. That made him think about his relationship with his father. Silently he took his things and headed for the door.
“Esteban, will you return to work? I can take you back” Regthar said approaching him.
"Thanks dad, but I'm not going back to the spaceport."
"Hey, I'm sorry about what happened with your human father... Tell me if I can do something to make you feel better..."
"No... Don't worry... I'll be fine, I just need... to clear my head a bit" The boy said before leaving. As he passed Avik and Dolkun, he greeted them politely.
"Nice to see you again, Mr. Avik." The Renzar frowned at him, and responded with a nod.
“Were you saying goodbye to her? Do you think that Natany will not recover, or are you the one who is going on a trip?
Esteban was surprised by Avik's observation, and he didn't know what to answer at first.
"She will recover, don't worry”, Dolkun said in turn
“Thank you patriarch, I know that Natany will improve. And Mr. Avik, I don't know why you say that, but I wasn't saying goodbye to her."
"Hmm... I thought so."
"Mr. Avik, I know you're a busy renzar, but I'd like to talk to you if possible sometime."
"I don't know boy. You said it. I'm very busy"
"Okay... Have a good afternoon" Esteban finished and then left the room. Regthar looked at her mother-in-law angrily, but continued to wait in silence for the latest medical report on Natany.
After having breakfast with the skunktaurs, Relia returned to the small hotel where she was staying. In her room, she was able to take a new shower and finally wear proper clothes. She would have liked Holly to come with her, but she didn't want to abuse hym any further. She tidied her suitcase and got ready to rest. At that moment, the doorbell rang.
Opening it, she was surprised to see Ulk standing in front of her, dressed in his usual work uniform.
"Hello Relia"
"Ulk?.. What are you doing here?"
“Regthar told me that you were staying at this hotel… Can we talk? It will be brief, since I am working”
The presence of the great Renzar surprised the polar bear. She hadn't expected Ulk to look for him after what had happened between them. After hesitating for a moment, Relia opened the door and invited him inside.
"Look, again I apologize for Cala..."
“Ulk, I already told you that it wasn't your fault. Forget it,” Relia interrupted.
“Well, I… I want you to know that I really enjoyed our meeting. You are such an exotic species and so similar to us…”
“But, I am not a Renzar. Cala made it very clear to me” replied the polar bear, crossing her arms.
"Relia... I..."
“What do you want, Ulk? Did you come to see me because you are worried about me? Or just to know if you will have another chance to sleep with me?”
"Uh?... Relia, no... I..."
“Well… I enjoyed it too. I admit it. You are an exquisite specimen Ulk. You Renzars have big dicks and are powerful, but I don't want that."
"Relia... I really like you..." Said the male approaching her. But the female put her hands on his chest pulling him away from her.
“You don't like me, Ulk. You like my body… And if you want it, pay for it”
"That! But what do you say Relia?
“What you hear, Ulk. I need credits. If you want me to be yours again, pay me” The female insisted in a serious tone.
“Relia, I…”
“If you're not willing to do it, then leave. You make me waste my time"
“I… I'm sorry. Relia…” The male said, shaking his head from side to side, completely taken aback by the female's attitude. Then he turned and walked away. Relia closed the door and took a deep breath. She sat up in bed and thought about what she had said. She closed her eyes and was saddened to such an extent that some tears appeared. But still, she was relieved when Ulk was gone. She wasn't sure what steps to take, but at least she had shown some strength, she thought to herself.
At the Renzar's, Sorah relaxedly gave Hajo some milk from her breasts. Doren, who had the day off, had stayed home, helping with the housework as usual. Seeing the renzar nursing her child, hy approached them smiling.
"I'm glad to see you so happy with Hajo, Sorah"
"Aww... Thanks Doren."
"Did you hear anything else about Natany?"
“Yes, Regthar called me recently and told me that she is out of danger. There is no serious damage and she will soon regain consciousness."
“That is excellent news!”
“Yes…” The Renzar replied. However, she noticed something strange on Doren's face, which at that moment, was in the masculine phase.
"What's happening to you?" she inquired.
"Eh?.. Well..." Doren sighed before continuing.
“There is no point in continuing to hide it. Sorah… I… I have decided to leave the clan, to live with my parents” The skunktaur said sadly. The female couldn't believe what she was hearing.
“Doren! What are you talking about. Let's see. I'll leave Hajo in his bed. You will sit next to me and you will explain to me that you are leaving" Sorah said before taking the little renzar to the other room. Doren started to get anxious. Hy had meditated on that for a long time, in secret, because hy feared a bad reaction from others. However, Sorah as a loving mother, gave hym confidence to speak. When the Renzar returned, she sat on the bed and made the skunktaur lie down beside her.
"Tell me little one. How come you're leaving?"
Esteban moved away from the center of the city, and almost without meaning to, he arrived at the Amistad cemetery. There were few people, since it was a working day. The boy entered the large gardens of the place. Behind some trees, he walked toward Vroeg's grave. Arriving in front of hys tombstone, he sat down on the ground. After a while of silence, the boy spoke aloud.
"Hello old friend. It's been a while since I came to see you. I'm sorry. But the last time I was here, the bad guys tried to kill me and well, do you remember? Heh... I don't have very fond memories of that, but... Here I am again, Vroeg.
“Surely, you're disappointed, aren't you? I couldn't eliminate the grudge and hatred against my father… You… You knew this would happen, right? ... Forgive me Vroeg"... Said the boy with a tone of sadness. The wind gently swayed the branches of the trees and from time to time some leaves fell to the ground. Esteban passed his hand over the tombstone, removing the dirt. With emotion he began to remember the days when he and the old skunktaur shared their time together.
“I don't know what to do Vroeg… I swear I don't know what to do. These feelings hurt me... I wish... I wish you were here... I wish I could listen to your wise advice one more time... Even your scolding would help me... I miss you old man... I don't know what to do with this feeling. Help me Vroeg, please” Said the human sobbing. His eyes clouded with tears as he leaned his head back. The silence of the place was absolute. Only the wind made the branches sound and in the distance, one could see the odd taurs visiting a relative in that field.
After a few moments, immersed in his thoughts, Esteban heard footsteps on the grass, on the dry leaves, coming towards him.
After almost a day of travel, Jhonny Carruthers finally arrived in Eucla City. The city looked gray because of the clouds that covered the sky. From the terminal, he took a private transport to his house, located on the outskirts of the city. Upon arriving and knocking on the door, a human woman of medium height came out to meet him.
“Johnny! You finally made it son!" She said excitedly hugging him warmly.
"Hi Mom. How have you been"
"Very good! Waiting for you son... And Vera?? Is she not coming with you?"
"No... Vera... She stayed at home, in New New York"
"But... why?... what happened?"
"Ufff... Nothing mom... It's just that"
“Johnny, I know you. Sit here, son, and tell me what happened to Vera."
After making themselves comfortable in a large armchair in the house, the engineer said with a listless voice.
“Vera's family opposes our relationship, mom. Her father practically kicked me out of his house. Vera wanted to come with me, but I suggested that she stay with her family. Neither of us expected this to happen."
“Oh… Johnny! I'm so sorry darling ”said the woman hugging her son. The sadness in the young man's heart was evident. His mother knew it and that's why she hugged him and she caressed him for a long time.
“Johnny, my little boy… Look at me… Look at your mother… If you really love that girl, everything will be alright. Why, you love her, right?"
"Yes mom"... The boy answered sobbing.
“Sorah, I… I was always a rebel. From a very young age, I was a real pain in the ass for my parents. I refused to study and left home early. They suffered a lot for my nonsense. I always did what I wanted and I was selfish. I admired boys like Ugkar, who had no strings attached and owned their lives. I loved that freedom.
"Oh... I see" Said the Renzar.
“When I met Ugkar, it was fascinating, because hy represented everything I wanted for my life. Freedom! I followed hym unconditionally. Even doing stupid things, like attacking Esteban and running over Lilethe. When I was in prison, I realized how foolish I had been."
"Ugkar encouraged you to do foolish things?"
"No. It was I who followed hym willingly. Lilethe realized in time and abandoned hym. But I didn't do it"
"Wow, Doren."
“Then, when Esteban forgave me, and Lilethe accepted me back, I understood my mistakes. When even you and Regthar forgave me and accepted me into your family… I realized how clumsy I had been all my life! And the pain I caused my parents!" Doren said with tears in hys eyes.
"Awww... Doren..." Sorah said before hugging the skunktaur affectionately.
“I'm sorry… Then, seeing that you and Regt took care of Esteban and Hajo, with such devotion. Realizing how strong the Renzar family tradition is, I realized that all this time away from home was wasted time with my parents. Instead of enjoying their company, and they enjoying me, I was selfish!" Doren added tearfully.
“Doren… It's never too late to do the right thing. It's… It's wonderful that you appreciate your parents again. I'm sure they'll be happy to have their son back again,” Sorah said, emotion in her voice.
“That's why I have to go, Sorah… But, it's not easy, because… Because I love you too! Love all of you very much!" Doren continued sobbing.
“We love you too Doren. Even for Hajo you are someone very important. But, it's okay if you want to go back to your parents."
“Lilethe… Lilethe always told me not to waste my parents, and that I was lucky to have them alive. I never listened to hym. But now I fully understand what my love meant."
"Have you told anyone else about this, honey?"
“No… And I know it will be difficult. But… It's something I know I have to do” Doren finished off, as he rested his head on Sorah's arms.
Esteban raised his head and turned around. A taur was slowly approaching him. He wore a kind of hood on his head that hid his face. However, the boy noticed that hy was a skunktaur, from the fluffy tail and the color of the fur. He stood up, thinking that perhaps hy was one of the caretakers of the cemetery.
“Hello… Is it closing time yet?” he asked wiping away his tears. But the stranger remained silent. Hy looked around and then moved closer to Esteban.
"It seems that there is no one else" Hy said with a calm voice. The human, surprised asked.
"Ehhh... are you looking for someone?"
"Yes... To you... Eugene"
"Excuse me?"
"I was looking for you, since you didn't go to see me in the asylum... That chakat, Blackspots, gave you my message?"
"Oh... So you are... Bram Skunktaur?"
“That's the name you gave me, Eugene. Tell me, why didn't you go see me?"
"Hey…? Well... I apologize, I didn't have time... I was going to do it..."
"Oh... the young, they live so fast, they never have time... For the important things" Said the old skunktaur. Esteban was stunned. He had completely forgotten the message Chakat Blackspots had given him. That Bram wanted to see him.
"Hey, I'm really sorry I didn't go to..."
“Fortunately I found you before them… hmmm”
"Before whom?"
“The nursing home caretakers, of course. They don't let me go out to stretch my legs anymore. They say I'm too old, that I'm a relic… They treat me like too delicate an object” Bram said in a serious tone.
"That's why I wear this hood, to hide from them, you see?"
"Oh... It's a good disguise, ha ha" Esteban said, trying to play along. Then he added.
“Hey, Shir Bram. I wanted to thank you for helping my recovery. I know that you took me from the hospital and took me to the beach when I was unconscious… Thank you”
“Hmmm…It wasn't me. It was hym,” Bram replied almost nonchalantly, pointing to Vroeg's tombstone.
"Ehh... No... I believed in my dream that it was Vroeg, but... I know it was you" The human insisted.
“My old friend Vroeg was the one who guided me to get you out of the hospital, and hy also woke you up. I just lent hym my will… Hym owes me” Bram said. Esteban, incredulous, agreed, and did not want to continue contradicting the old man. After a moment when Bram bent down to touch Vroeg's tombstone, Esteban declared:
“Well, while we're here, Blackspots told me that you wanted to see me. Do you… do you have something to tell me?”
Bram, looking around, answered.
"Did you forgive your father?"
"What?"
"Everything that happens from now on will depend on that, boy"
"Hey? Well… I…”
“Eugene… Your lessons. Don't forget them."
“But why do you call me Eugene. My name is Esteban"
“You still have those nightmares, with us? Hmmm” The old man suddenly said. Esteban was surprised. He remembered New Bletchely, at the Liberation Day celebration, when seeing a crowd of skunktaurs, he almost fainted from the great guilt that surged in his heart.
“How…how do you know I have those kinds of…feelings…”
“Cause and effect, boy. Everything must be fulfilled. Nobody can with the laws of the universe. Didn't Vroeg teach you that?… Hmmm… Old fool” Bram said, as hy continued to look worriedly from side to side. Suddenly, a vehicle entered through the main entrance. Bram, seeing it declared.
"Damn! Are they! They discovered me!... Ah... And don't forget that it wasn't just your mother who gave you life. Also your father. It's no use hating him. The past is dead. For your sake, bury him, and continue... Do you miss Vroeg?... What a fool you are... Hy lives in your house!... Goodbye boy!” The skunktaur said as hy tried to move towards another sector of the cemetery. But hys walk was so slow that it was evident to Esteban that hy wouldn't get very far. After a few minutes, a couple of chakats came up to Esteban.
"Hello Shir"
"Hi sir. Excuse me, did that skunktaur do something to you or annoy you?"
"No, we just chatted"
"Glad to hear it. Yuma, go get hym!" He ordered his partner. In the act, the chakat ran agilely making several jumps through the cemetery until reaching it. Esteban, full of curiosity, declared.
"Excuse me Shir. I know that Skunktaur. His name is Bran, right?"
"That's how it is. He has lived in the asylum for decades, since hys mind stopped thinking clearly ”Said the chakat. Esteban, intrigued, asked.
"What do you mean, Shir?"
“Bran is a second generation skunktaur. Hy is 147 years old. Hy was already born when the skunktaurs were released."
"That! That… That's amazing!
"Well, you know that chakats and skunktaurs can live that many years, right?"
"Yes of course" Esteban said, as he saw that the other chakat had caught up with hym and led hym back to the asylum vehicle with hys arms around hym.
“We were able to locate it thanks to a tracking device that all our inmates have, in case they get lost”
"I see"
“Though, a couple of years ago, hy got away from us and then we learned hy was captured by a gang of skunktaur slavers. It was a planetary scandal. You sure remember. However, hym managed to escape and returned by hys own means to Amistad. That is why we now take a lot of precautions with hym” added the chakat.
"I see" Esteban said, still perplexed.
"Well I have to go. Sorry for the inconvenience. Tail High!” Said the chakat.
“Tail High! Shir” answered Esteban, without coming out of his astonishment.
The Chakona sun was about to set behind the horizon. Esteban was still surprised. The old skunktaur told him to forgive his father. Perhaps it was Vroeg himself who spoke through hym. At least, that was what the boy thought, for a long time, as he returned home.
At Vika-B's base, while sleeping, Ugkar was breathing heavily. Hy moved from one side of the bed to the other, while hy dreamed. Aldorah Krim, hys mate, awoke to the stirring.
"Ugkar, wake up... Wake up... What's wrong with you!" The Rakshani said worriedly, as she moved hys body to wake him up. But Ugkar growled and waved hys hands as if hy were in a fight.
"Wake up Ugkar!" Aldorah finally exclaimed, causing the skunktaur to open hys eyes.
"That! No! No! ..” hy exclaimed, getting up agitated.
“Ugkar! What happens!" Inquired the worried female.
“Aldorah! What happened! Where are everybody!" Ugkar exclaimed in agitation.
"You had a nightmare, calm down."
"No... Aldorah... No... I... I must return to Chakona!"
"What!" The Rakshani exclaimed in bewilderment. But Ugkar, looking into her eyes, insisted.
“I have… I have to go back!” The skunktaur finally said, in the middle of the night, at the Krikar base.

***At Vika-B's base, while sleeping, Ugkar was breathing heavily.
