A simple break down of the slave collars used in 'Red Lantern' ( http://www.furaffinity.net/view/4260941 ). This is mostly a blueprint for an eventual real-life collar, being designed by
Lagarto. For now, a test design might be used for an upcoming fursuit, but if it seems a legit idea, in time, we may try and produce a limited few that will actually be for sale.
The collar will not actually be metal. It will be made of a stiff metallic external leather, and a softer, comfortable internal leather. The House Tags we'll have to get done by someone who does engraving. And the seam will include snaps so you can easily pull it on and off, not leave it on for life like the actual folks in the comic ;P
I'm mostly a nerd who likes to see my drawings in live form, so the idea of producing these for sale could just be a pipe dream of mine. I'd be eager to know what people would consider paying for one of these bad boys, if they ever came to be. Keeping in mind that it's leather, and involves a decent amount of craftsmanship by the makers.

I don't think that would even cover the manufacturing costs x3 I don't know if she wants to do it and make a decent profit, or just do it for fun, by she'll want to at least break even. I don't imagine the life of an artist tends to yield a high income (well, I know it doesn't, unless you draw a black line on a White canvas and sell it for thousands...)
Well, I'm no expert on fetishes, but I imagine:
Leather (I don't know if metal is, but it's probably someone's)
Submission/Dom
Master/Slave // Master/Pet
I guess...strangulation?
Probably bondage in there
I'd love to see how you make these, though. I'd love to view a step-by-step photo tutorial, or would you be sending them to someone else to make?

Honestly, I'd have no idea how much something like this would be worth. I know that working chainmail can get really expensive, but I'm not sure about the leather, especially once you include the engraving. For something like this, I think it'd help to get an idea of how much it'll cost to produce and then consider both how much you want to make from the time and investemen, and a feeling of how much people might pay. I could see a lot of people having interest, as not only do you have a lot of people following Red Lantern (of which I'm still curious as to the link between title and story), but I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of furrys enjoy wearing collars of one form or another from time to time, and a unique one with the level of personality this would have I can see having a fair bit a draw.
the 'Red Lantern District' is the area of the city in which the Crimson Divine (the brothel that owns Dhaval and Amon) is located. It's a throwout to the 'Red Light Districts' of yore, and today. As is necessary and cheesy in most stories and/or movies, the actual title will be thrown out at one point in conversation in the first comic, later on in the story.
Well, I don't really have much money, but I am surrounded by scrap metal and have amatuerish talent for metalworking. That's why I asked. I was just hoping maybe if I made one I could buy a little scan of that symbol so I had something accurate and to-scale so I could hand-engrave it.
In some of the more extreme BDSM settings, you can find some pretty devious steel collars already, and many crafted for 24/7 wear.
But they dont have the Red Lantern House engraving on them.
BTW, do we have a detailed picture of the house logo anywhere? Forgive me if its out there, and I missed it.

If you feel comfortable in doing so, I would love to see it and its explanation in design if it has one. I also understand if you would rather not. Its in effect something you have that is a possible way to help keep you afloat and well, to keep great art, comics, and stories coming. 8-)
You have bit off a really broad storyline this time, and you deserve it IMHO.

I wonder if it would be possible to put magnets into the latch area. o_o It would be more seamless than if you actually have to use snaps, and would still hold together pretty well. They would bave to be pretty powerful, though.. I would imagine if they weren't, a neck turn or flex would make it pop off.
Neodymium magnets would work. The most powerful magnets made out there. If you had two the size of a hockey puck for instance, and got them within a foot of each other and your finger was in the way... You might loose that finger at worst, and have it turned to pulp at best.
I got a box full of them of assorted sizes from a company that specializes in radioactive isotopes for sale. Small ones I have already manged to pinch and draw blood on a few occasions.

They are actually not that expensive as you would expect If I bought one, i would not mind paying the extra at all, rather than to have a piss poor clasp that let it pop off easily. I would be more PO'd at that than paying an extra few bucks many times over for something that would hold.
It would require more tooling, but the idea of a tapped thruhole not on the surface, but on the edge tapped thru both sections where a small hex screw could be threaded is an idea. For safety, it could be a frangible plastic screw so any severe force could break it away is a major consideration there.
info from a magnet seller: (not expensive, but will require some learning on my part)
General Magnet Information
We only sell Neodymium Magnets - they are currently the most powerful magnets available. All our magnets are high grade Neodymium, grade N45. They are much, much stronger than the more common Ceramic Magnets, ALNICO Magnets, or lower grade Neodymium magnets ( Grade N28, N35, N38, or N40 ). They are also more expensive.
Neodymium magnets are very powerful, much more powerful than magnets most people are familiar with and need to be handled with proper care. The magnetic fields from these magnets can affect each other from more than 12 inches away. Please note that these magnets are fragile. Even though they are coated with a tough protective nickel plating, do not allow them to snap together with their full force or they may chip, break, and possibly send small pieces of metal flying on impact. Our magnets can easily bruise fingers and the larger ones can break finger bones and even crush hands as they attempt to connect together.
Always wear protective eyewear or safety goggles when handling the magnets. Keep magnets away from any magnetic based storage devices such as desktop or laptop computers, hard drives, floppy disks, cassette tapes, VHS tapes, or credit cards. A distance of at least 12" should be kept between magnets and these items at all times. Neodymium magnets are not suitable for small children to play with.
If small magnets are ingested, they can connect together in parts of the digestive system, blocking proper operation and cause death. These magnets should only be handled under strict adult supervision.
1/2" Dia. x 1/16" thick Disc (pack of 12)
1/2" Dia x 1/16th" Thick NdFeB Disc Magnet, Grade N45, Ni Plated with Matte finish, Axially Magnetized (the top & bottom flat faces are the north & south poles).
$8.00
I suppose these small ones could be safe enough if encased in leather, so they can never "clack together" and chip/break. I've played with ceramic magnets long ago, but those were pretty safe. My concern with these is the complaints that "my collar erased my credit card stripe" or "these were unleashed upon my home and have caused much mayhem".
From wikipedia:
Precautions
Neodymium metal dust is a combustion and explosion hazard. Neodymium compounds, as with all rare earth metals, are of low to moderate toxicity; however its toxicity has not been thoroughly investigated. Neodymium dust and salts are very irritating to the eyes and mucous membranes, and moderately irritating to skin. Breathing the dust can cause lung embolisms, and accumulated exposure damages the liver. Neodymium also acts as an anticoagulant, especially when given intravenously.[7]
Neodymium magnets have been tested for medical uses such as magnetic braces and bone repair, but biocompatibility issues have prevented widespread application. Commercially available magnets made from neodymium are exceptionally strong, and can attract each other from large distances. If not handled carefully, they come together very quickly and forcefully, causing injuries. For example, there is at least one documented case of a person losing a fingertip when two magnets he was using snapped together from 50 cm away.[17]

Very good info. A major part is how big do you need them to be effective. Of course the smaller they are the less intense the magnetic field, so some testing would have to be done to find the size and shape correct for the collar size, then see from there if it would be an issue.
I erased a hotel room key with a 1cm x 1cm one I had in my pocket once, but my wallet and other "more durable" cards did ok for instance.

Mmm, For all those people asking about how much this might cost, making it in metal... ect ect - have a look here.

With the work involved whether the outer layer is metal or not, Id say a solid $50 for the craftsmanship that will be required. Also I like the idea's above from Maekip and Wet Coyote. Neodymium magnets would be a perfect clasp for the colar and a powdercoat black set of the magnets would enhance the look with a dark glossy seamless look, and would be very cost effective
I actually wonder, in the base universe if a character managed to either get the collar off or remove/replace the tag to cause confusion and possibly escape, what kind of punishments would ensue.
Obviously, the amount paid for the slave would more than likely not warrant killing him/her. Also, the island nation setup would make actually escaping difficult without leaving a pretty obvious trail of carnage, and to add to that the docks are probably watched 24/7 by guards.
Furthermore, to add to the confusion, if a slave managed to somehow remove the collar and escape at least into the population would he successfully survive in the underground or would they be in on the slave trade and just bribe his/her owner to turn the slave over?

I think it would be most fun to have these as a limited edition, so instead of an open production run, they are numbered to something small, like 9 of them in total. That way they can be made with higher quality parts (like the engraved front plate and latching mechanisms), and be something more special than just a collar anyone else can buy. These can be a slave auction! Buy your slave collar for your slave (or make yourself the slave). All would be custom fit to the wearer, and
rukis gets #1 for the costume, of course.
Just my opinions, this whole idea is more for the interest it will generate in the comic, rather than to throw some leather on folk.

I'd be interested. You'd probably have to have several sizes since there's such a large variety of neck
diameters. I imagine that $80 would cover fabrication costs and still leave you a little profit margin.
Some furs might think that excessive, but quality work doesn't come cheaply.

If I weren't living below the poverty level, I'd be happy to pay $40-75 for one of these. (Maybe by the time they're produced I won't be poor anymore, in which case, I WILL buy one!)
Things that come to mind for me:
• Sizing. This is clearly the sort of thing that needs to have a decent fit right off the bat, as there aren't any adjusting buckles or anything. You'd need a range of sizes, at least S-M-L, for this to work.
• I've never owned anything in metallic leather, so please correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't it tend to crease and crinkle with time and use? I've seen it happen with various items my friends have, and it's not particularly attractive (IMO) and definitely breaks the illusion of metal. Or is this just the result of cheaper materials?
Also, this is more related to the comic than the potential product line, but - that metal looks awfully thick and not inclined to bend very far. How does the farrier get it onto the slave without destroying the slave's neck?

This would be a neat concept for sale, even would give people a reason to stop and ask, "What's w/the collar?" or "What's the concept of the flower on it?" Kind of a conversation piece to promote the comic a little to people. I know in a way I would purchase one to wear about at Con.'s and its kind of a neat memento of the Comic
D8 i want one of those collars so badly now.... i would like... never take it off unless i took a shower or went swimming... but damn i want one. those be some sexy collars.. i may get two if they ever do become an actual product. one for me and one for my mate lol. :P
As the original leather version was quite limited.. would it be possible / permitted to use this design for our own products (for a cut of the sales perhaps)?
I'm thinking of trying to do a real metal version.. a friend of mine runs a company for laser engravings and waterjet cuts, so getting the steel hoop cut is rather easy. Leather inlay - will need to commission that somewhere.
Even with rather thin stainless steel (~1/8") that collar will get quite heavy.. 1lb probably.. dunno if that's still wearable.
Damn.. the craftsman in me is running wild again.. =^.^=
