CHAPTER 49
After the accident and the evidence found, the authorities had very little doubt about Esteban's fate. However, they still did not dare to declare him officially dead, out of respect for some friends who still had some hope since his body had not been found.
However, for Regthar and Sorah, everything was clear, and their lives were once again tinged with pain and sadness for the loss of a child. At work, Regthar received full support from his colleagues and bosses, giving him several days off. Doren returned to the Renzar's house for a while, accompanied by hys parents skunks, taking care to accompany and attend to hys ursid friends, and also to little Hajo.
Avik and Varta visited them permanently, always comforting them. So did the rest of the Amistad Renzar community, including the Dolkun patriarch and Khudok tournament fighters.
The Renzar delegation had already finished negotiations with Chakona for the implementation of the IGC and other trade agreements, and was getting ready to return to Grom. One day before that, however, the Sivem family decided to establish a symbolic and simple memorial in the Amistad cemetery to remember Esteban, leaving some of his belongings there. In an emotional ceremony, both the family and close friends attended the place to inaugurate the small site.
There were Regthar, Sorah and Hajo. Joining them were Rena, Hesper, Holly, Cora, and Teo. Doren and hys parents. Chakat Lorna and hys parents. Chakat Lorel with Liner and Gret. Rogar Skunktaur. There were also the Renzar Sachi, Rhealle, Cala, Ulk, the Dolkun patriarch, Avik, and Varta. Natany with her police colleagues. A little further away, looking into the distance, was also Gerak-Nee.
Some of them said heartfelt words remembering Esteban. Lorna didn't have the courage to speak, staying the whole time hugging hys father's Chakat. Sachi, who had in her hands the pendant that the rescuers found and that she had given to Esteban some time ago, couldn't stop crying. While everyone remained in respectful silence, a human woman slowly approached the group, carrying a bouquet of flowers in her hands. In a very earthy tradition, the woman approached and placed the flowers at the foot of the memorial. Everyone was surprised to see that she had a great resemblance to Esteban. The woman then approached Regthar, took his hands and gave him condolences. Regthar hugged her lovingly.
“Thank you for coming, little one. You don't know how much you look like him. You even smell like him” Said the Renzar. Angela then turned around and said out loud.
“I am very sorry for your loss. My name is Angela Melinao. Esteban was my half brother. I didn't know that I had a brother, until dad told me in a letter, before traveling to Chakona. Our father passed away a few weeks ago and Esteban and I met at the hospital. I did not have the opportunity to get to know my brother more deeply. No time. But all of you do. And from what I've been told, he was a wonderful person. I just want to say that I share the pain that you are feeling right now. Thank you for taking care of him."
Everyone present was moved to tears. The first to react was Sorah, who gently hugged Angela.
“By Grom, thank the gods for meeting you, Angela. Regthar told me about you, but we thought you had returned to Terra."
“I was about to return to take the remains of my father back to our city. But then what happened with Esteban”
"Oh, little one. I am sorry about the death of your father. You have loaded down the departure of two of your relatives in such a short time. I'm sorry"
"It's alright Sorah. I cried for my father what I owed. Now it is you who must be strong. From the little that I got to know my brother, I am sure that he would want you to continue forward, as a family, happily.” Angela said with a smile.
“Thank you, my little girl. You are welcome to our home if you ever decide to return to Chakona,” Sorah stated.
"That's right, you will always be welcome" added Regthar.
“Hmmm… How absurd! Why is everyone lamenting?” A voice was heard among those present. They were all shocked. Turning around, they saw an old skunktaur approaching the small memorial.
“When you save a seed, you don't regret planting it in the ground. On the contrary, you are happy because that seed will become a tree. The tree you always wanted to have. And for that to happen, the seed must stop being a seed. It must die for the tree to be born. There cannot be a seed and a tree at the same time. One must die for the other to be born. One cycle must end for the next to continue. That is the nature of reality!”
"Oh, it's Bram!" Rogar said to hymself, holding hys head. The dean slowly approached hym and said:
"Calm down Bram. Please respect the pain of the people present here."
“They shouldn't feel pain. The only one who has felt true pain for the death of that boy, is me. Because I saw him die for real in front of me. And I also saw him reborn. But now, you have witnessed how the seed becomes a tree. So why are they crying?
They all looked at the old skunktaur curiously. However, no one dared to say anything. Rogar approached the Renzar and declared.
"I'm sorry. Bram is close to 150 years old. And he sometimes says strange things…”
"Don't worry. We understand,” Regthar replied.
As time passed, people began to withdraw little by little from the place. At one point, Regthar walked slowly towards the exit, hand in hand with Sorah. In the distance, Avik watched them. Old Renzar pondered how wrong he had been all this time about Regthar. His prejudice had alienated him and Sorah. Suddenly, he felt a hand on his shoulder.
“They are a wonderful Renzar couple. You should be proud of them” said the old Dolkun next to him.
“You were right to support Sorah, when she wanted to come to Chakona. It has all been so strange for me... That human and his tragic death made me think again."
“Avik, that happens to people with rigid thinking. They need a hard blow to react. Life is not rigid. It is flexible."
"Meh... You take delight in telling me, don't you?"
"Oh no, old friend... Despite the pain that overwhelms us, I'm happy that you're here with us, that you and Regthar get along better... And I'm happy that you're with me"
"I don't know whether to say the same about Varta..."
“All in good time, Avik. For now, the important thing is that you two support Sorah and Regthar. We will see what will happen next between you and Varta”
“Dolkun, I must return to Grom. The negotiations are over, and I have duties to fulfill."
"I know friend"
“But at the same time, I would like to stay with the boys for a while longer… We wasted so much time apart… For Grom… I'm so sorry for that boy's death…”
“Avik, look ahead. I'm sure Regthar and Sorah will be happy to build a new relationship with you. A new cycle. Start from scratch. You heard that old skunktaur, all loops must close. Nothing lasts forever, not even grudges, pain, grief or guilt. Leave the past behind, my friend."
"Heh... We're not talking about Varta, right?" Avik said before continuing to walk with Dolkun towards the exit.
In Eucla City, meanwhile, at Sonia and Jhonny's house, Don the bear finished preparing dinner. A few weeks ago, Jhonny and Vera were raising money by doing temporary jobs to travel to Amistad and visit the Renzars and be with Lilethe, who was still in a coma in the hospital. They wanted with all their hearts to be with Lorna, whom they called every day, trying to cheer her up, although they, too, were saddened by Esteban's departure. Vera, since the discussion with her father, had not returned to her house in New New York and only communicated through PADD with her mother Carla.
"Well, dinner is ready!" Don announced with his characteristic laugh and wobbly belly in the dining room. Sonia called the boys to sit at the table. At that moment, the doorbell of the house rang.
"Who can It Be?" Sonya asked suddenly.
"I'll go, don't worry. Maybe it's one of the neighbors,” Don said, moving closer to the door.
"Honey, I don't think it's wise for you to go outside half naked, covered only with your kitchen apron" Sonia said apprehensively.
“Let him do it, mom. I love the personality of your lifemate. He is not ashamed of anything” Jhonny commented with a smile.
Opening the door, the bear morph was surprised to see a cat morph standing in front of him.
"Yeah? How can I help you, sir?"
“Uh… Good afternoon. Is this the house of Johnny Carruthers?
“Yes, Johnny lives here. Who is looking for him?
“I am Tiber Markham. Vera's father” replied the visitor. Don grimaced and closed the door behind him.
"I see. So you kicked Vera out of your house, right?"
"Hey? No! It was Vera who left the house on her account ”
"What kind of father are you, that you can't tolerate that your daughter is mated with a human being?"
"Hey? Listen! I didn't come here to argue with you!"
"What's wrong my love?" Sonia suddenly said after peeking outside. Don put his arm around her and responded.
"My dear, this cat is Vera's father."
Tiber was surprised to realize that the bear had a human woman as a partner.
“Oh… You must be Tiber. Nice to meet you. My name is Sonia Carruthers. I'm Johnny's mom. And this is my lifemate, Don” Sonia said politely shaking Tiber's hand. “Please come in. We are about to have dinner."
“Oh… No thanks… I… I don't want to interrupt. I just wanted to confirm that Vera is here. I'll come back later"
"If she's here. And don't worry, she's fine. However, she has been very sad lately because of the death of one of her friends in Amistad. Both she and Jhonny want to travel to the capital”
“Yes, Carla, my wife, told me about that. Well, I'm here because I want to talk to Vera, but I'll be back later."
“Mr. Tiber, if I may say so, it is very good that you are here. Vera needs her parents in these difficult times. Come back whenever you want and she will listen to you, don't worry."
“Th… Thank you Sonia. And sorry to interrupt. I'll be back later. Goodbye” Said the cat morph before leaving. Don looked at Sonia and commented.
"I noticed that he is a somewhat rude guy... But I guess Vera will have to listen to him"
"Don. He is her father. She has to listen to him. And I'll make sure she does it” Sonia finished, before returning to the dining room hugging Don.
