CHAPTER 52 (Co-writted with
)
After the incident, a series of people dressed in the typical uniform of the Stellar Federation and heavily armed, teleported to the fifth floor of the hospital. Likewise, a group of local police officers arrived at the entrance of the building, guarding the place. Several doctors and nurses rushed to the intensive care room to check on Lilethe's state of health. Meanwhile, another medical team was in charge of taking the Chakat nurse to a recovery room to provide medical attention. Mark was also transferred to another area of the hospital and a group of surgeons was in charge of removing the scalpels that the man had buried in his body as a result of the fight, and treating the rest of his wounds.
Ugkar arrived at the hospital as soon as hy could teleport. After exchanging a few words with members of the strike team, hy headed straight for the room where the doctors had moved Lilethe. Seeing hym, the second lieutenant was deeply moved. Hy hadn't had a chance to see hys ex-denmate since hy arrived in Chakona. Despite what had happened, Lilethe's face looked calm. Ugkar couldn't resist stroking hys forehead.
“Oh, Lilethe. What did they do to you? Ugkar wondered trying to puzzle out in hys mind the reason for hys unconsciousness, using hys talents. But it was all in vain. Lilethe seemed to be deeply disconnected from reality. At that instant, a Rakshani agent rushed into the room.
“Shir, the person you want to see, is already available in your room. Please follow me" Said the feline. They both crossed the corridor, and then entered another room. There, there was a stretcher, and on it, lay a human being.
"Oh! it's you?" Mark said, as a white and gray chakat firmly bandaged his thigh. "I haven't heard from you in a long time, since that incident in Berdoovia"
Ugkar grimaced at the memory of what had happened that time, looking at the man in silence.
"Tell me. I suppose it was you who sent me the information about that friend of yours, right?"
"Yes" Ugkar answered seriously, seeing some hostility in Mark's words.
"What's next now?" The human asked sarcastically.
"I want to thank you for protecting Lilethe," Ugkar said shortly.
"You know very well that I did not do it for you, but for Esteban"
"I know. Anyway, thanks. And sorry for putting you in danger. But knowing that you were here, and knowing your combat experience, was the only thing I could do."
“You did well, skunk. I guess I was your only option."
"You saved us valuable time and prevented that... damn, from hurting my dear friend."
"Maybe I don't like you too much, but I hate that friend of yours even more, so at least tell me who hy was and why you say hy's to blame for Esteban's death" Mark suddenly inquired. Ugkar, upon question, stated.
"Sorry, it's confidential information"
“Hmmm… Don't tell me. At least I hope I've hurt hym enough, if what you say is true. A loose teleporter must be a pain in the ass."
“Yes, there is no doubt about it. Now I must go. Thanks again” Ugkar said as hy left the room.
"Esteban... Did you find him?" Mark suddenly asked. Ugkar paused for a second at the entrance, and shuddered. However, hy continued on hys way without saying anything else.
"Everything is clear... Well, if you want to do something right, do it yourself" said Mark in a low voice, thinking of continuing his search. But at that moment, he felt weak and sleepy. Tired, he rested his head on the pillow, looking at the beautiful chakat nurse who smiled back at him.
The veteran combatant felt terribly tired from the sedatives and painkillers. He slowly closed his eyes letting himself be carried away by the darkness and peace, moving away from all that noisy and hectic world that ceased to exist for him.
"Lieutenant Ugkar!" Said one of the Voxxan agents present. The skunktaur turned and presented hymself in front of him. The agent was of a higher rank than hym.
“Officers reported that Faise attacked a human, a chakat, and a skunktaur patient at this hospital. Any idea why?"
Despite the diadem hy still wore on hys head, Ugkar couldn't help but sense hostility in the Voxxan, just as hy did in Mark's mind.
"Why do you ask me?" hy answered him.
“Because this Faise guy is just like you. I suppose they think alike.” Hearing these words, Ugkar flew into a rage.
“Don't you dare compare me to that wretch! I'm not like hym!”
“No offense, but you two are freaks of the same origin. And now hy escaped. I hope you help us find hym."
"Grrr..." The skunk growled at the arrogance of the Voxxan
"Stop! Lieutenant Carm, leave us alone!" Brey ordered suddenly, seeing the tension between them. Ugkar gritted hys teeth in anger, but Brey picked up on hys emotions and tried to calm hym down.
“Don't listen to him, Ugkar. The Voxxan are not familiar with skunk talents, even our own. Some fear us” Said the chakat director.
“In Vika, I met a Voxxan female, who is the complete opposite of that idiot. So don't worry, Brey, I don't think they're all the same,” Ugkar replied.
"Good. This appearance of Faise speeds up the capture process. This incident should not be disclosed, so as not to create panic. Did you talk to that man?"
"Yeah. Don't worry. He is an ex-soldier. And he will know how to keep silent ”
"Good. We must reorient the capture strategies and develop a new plan. That skunk was looking for something in this place, with that skunktaur Lilethe” Said the director.
"Yes, Shir. Hy was looking for something…Hy was looking for me” Ugkar replied, meeting the Chakat's eyes. This. Surprised he replied.
"You're sure?"
"Completely Shir" Ugkar replied.
“Then we must all return to the Chakona Gateway right now. We must work immediately.” The director ordered all the agents present in the place.
Meanwhile, hidden somewhere in Amistad, Faise was recovering from the pain caused by the electric shock that Mark gave hym.
"Stupid human!"
"Calm down. It was very risky what you did!” Grosh the raccoon replied as he cleaned the skunktaur's superficial wounds.
“For much less, I have killed. That chakat that bit me… If it wasn't for the police…”
"Did you at least get information from Lilethe?"
“No… I think I damaged hys neurons too much. I liked that skunktaur you know? The connection that Lilethe has with that human, prevented hy from being completely mine. But it doesn't matter anymore. It all ended between those two."
"Esteban's death... Was it necessary?" Grosh suddenly asked.
“He knew too much. Anyway, the police already found out. The only thing left to do now is wait for the best opportunity to get out of Chakona.”
“The contact, will it help us? Are you sure he is trustworthy?" inquired the raccoon.
"He will do it. His species is as interested in me as the Federation itself. Through them, we will return to our space territory” The skunktaur replied with a smile.
“I hope so, Faise. We have already risked too much” finished off the raccoon.
"Do not worry honey. I'm here. Trust me” Said the skunktaur, as hy gave him a soft kiss on the mouth.
That night, at the Civitas Grand Resort, Droquen had come out of his room to get some air. Tomorrow, he would leave back to Grom along with the Renzar delegation, as planned. Instead of going down to the lobby, he decided to go up to the observation deck on the roof, just as he had done a few nights before. Somehow, watching the city lights and the starry sky calmed his mind.
He walked around the edge of the roof and came to the same place where, long ago, he had found Relia hanging from the railing. The Renzar soaked in the memory of her and smiled. He wondered why he had liked that girl if she wasn't a renzar. In his years of working security, he had never seen anyone like her. She small, fragile, and insecure. She was completely different from the Renzar females he had known.
Relia had everything to make a Gromnian happy. An anatomy very similar to a female of his species, although with finer feet and hands, and hair that gave it an exotic touch for him. The more he thought of her, the more he wanted to see her one more time. He drew from her clothes, her PADD to call her. He started to type her name, but stopped. Droquen sighed for a moment and then put the device back.
"Oh Relia... why can't I get you out of my head, you silly girl?" he said to himself in a low voice, while one of Chakona's moons peeked timidly behind the mountains.
The memory of Esteban remained latent in Regthar's heart. A long time ago, since Ugkar left, the Renzar was sitting in the garden trying to assimilate everything he had found out that day. Varta had also left shortly after Avik's arrival. Only Sorah and Hajo were left at home along with Doren, who had kindly offered to accompany them. The night became increasingly cold in Amistad and the breeze coming from the sea removed the hairs from Regthar's skin, who continued dressed in his fighter's outfit.
Suddenly, his father-in-law, Avik, approached him little by little. Regthar, without raising his head, declared.
“We had planned to go camping at Silverlake, a wildlife sanctuary not far from here. We talked about it a couple of times."
"Hmmm... If you still want to go, I'll accompany you" The striped-skinned Renzar answered.
"Uh?.. I thought you would return to Grom"
“I will, eventually. But after hearing what you talked about with that skunktaur lieutenant about the Justa, I can't leave now."
“Grrr… Avik! I already told you not to interfere in this!”
“Easy, easy” I won't. It would be useless. Not even your police sister could, I guess. But tell me. What will you get by killing that skunktaur?”
"Justice! What else!" Regthar declared with conviction standing up. “Also, I know that Natany thinks like me. She wanted apply Juste with Brend when that jerk almost killed Esteban."
“You know, when I talked to that boy. It seemed to me that he was not the type of person who approved of violence. And, from the little that I knew him, I get the feeling that he would not agree to your personal vendetta."
"Please Avik. Don't lecture me, I'm not a puppy”.
"I know, Regthar. And lucky for you, our current Planetary Delegate, hails from a region of Grom where jousting is still legal. You know that I am an influential Renzar in Grom's political circle. While I was inside the house, avoiding Varta, I spoke directly to the PADD Delegate. She had already been informed of the situation by the Chakona government and secretly decided to lend some of our agents to collaborate in the Federal search team."
"That? The Planetary Delegate did that? But why?" Regthar asked in surprise.
“Because Esteban, being legally your and Sorah's son, is also a citizen of Grom. And as you know, we Renzar take care of our own,” Avik replied, placing a hand on Regthar's shoulder. Then he added.
“If you're going to do this, you're going to need weapons and protection. And I'm willing to get it for you. You should at least level the situation, if this will really be a Justa”
“Thank you Avik!..” Regthar said excitedly.
“Don't thank me yet. My condition is that you tell Sorah. She has the right to know what you will do and the risk you will take! And if my daughter doesn't agree, I won't support you."
"Well, that seems fair to me!" Regthar said, as he breathed in the cold air of the Amistad night.
