An eternal dilemma. MoodyFerret has been struggling with that one for half a century.
Go one way too hard, and it looks like you've put a giant animal in a civilized setting, lean too far the other way -- and the animal quality turns superfluous and redundant, as the characters become overdressed, uncomfortable-looking humans for all intents or purposes.
So, no good answers. But no bad ones, either.
It could be a good concept for a themed video account -- a string of completely straight-faced essays on ridiculous topics presented as sprawling, timeless cultural narratives and philosophical conundrums that every historic figure has had a take on.

I often pick the compromise between the two, extend the fur into manes following the natural hair flow and style these because I think human hair added as-is often looks like a wig (especially if it's completely different color than surroundings) but that's just personal preference
