Yet another Cold War era piece, and an actual proper tank to boot. Replacing the M26 and M46 medium/heavy tanks, the M47 became the main combat tank for the US forces during the early part of the Cold War, as well as seeing widespread use among members of NATO as well as other Western-allied nations.
While the US didn't really get to use it much themselves, the M47 did get to see plenty of action in the hands of other countries; in fact, the tank itself is still in service today, with several hundreds in active use with the Iranian Army. Of course, it should be noted that these tanks are heavily updated and modified, but even so it still goes to show how sometimes old tanks won't go away.
A bit of a fun fact, the turret used on the M47 was originally meant for a different tank project called the T42, however due to the Korean War unfolding, the Army was suddenly in a hurry to get new tanks. Believing that there wasn't enough time to finish up development on the T42, it was decided to basically take the turrets from that project and stick them onto the existing Patton hulls. And thus, the M47 was born!
