Summary: An anxious vixen is on her third date with a handsome tod. Despite her excitement, something is weighing on her. She seems to be counting something, but to what end? Will her date end in disaster or will good fortune manage to come her way?
Disclaimer: This story will feature adult content after chapter four. There's plenty of innocent flirting and excitement in these first parts, however, and I want as much feedback on that portion of the writing as I can get. Thank you for taking the time to read, and it is my hope that the romance stands on its own.
Huff, huff, huff...
Oh jeez, this was maybe not the best idea, her inner voice complained. They were only a few minutes into the jog, and she already felt out of place in this activity. Her jogging form was sloppy and her breathing unsteady. She had been tackling some weights at home, using some of what Feldspar had taught her a while back, but she was a big slacker on the cardio. Not to mention the extra energy being spent dodging the friendly falling fluffs that would just love to give her pink-hued nostrils a hug.
Feldspar on the other hand was completely composed, his deep black and white-tipped tail remaining elegantly stretched out behind him, holding itself in place as he bounced rhythmically on the path a few feet ahead of her. At its base, she takes note of his grey-colored leather tail bracelet, lined with thin strips of knotted chrome. Beyond the base, hints of rusty colored fur. The pleasant smell of his exertion wafts through her sinuses, giving her subtle motivation to keep up.
His ears train themselves on her sounds. The backs of them are a deep black, contrasting the orange fluff found from the front, both adorned on their outer sides with a chrome ear-cuff several inches in length. Listening closely, he ensures he matches her pace as he takes seemingly random turns along the nested trails. "I love how this place twists and turns. It's really easy to lose yourself in the maze of trees, figuratively of course. Oh, this is also a biking trail, Maya, so try to keep to the right side if you hear wheels ahead, or behind." That makes sense. She had noticed a few people unloading bikes in the parking lot during her time spent waiting. "Speaking of which, incoming!"
With a sidestep to the right, a red blur on a bike zips by them, swirling the air. A stray fluff encroaches on her personal space, and she puffs through her mouth to chase it away. "Do they always ride by us so fast? It seems unsafe."
He shakes his head, dislodging a few tufts of white lodged in his wavy hair. "Not always, it depends on the section. They're more aware at that speed than you would think. Haven't been hit yet, if that's your worry."
One of the worries, at least, she thinks as she bobs around the incoming swarm of white. So far so good, but the plan was to be out here for thirty minutes or more. Not wanting to be alone with her thoughts, she probes Feldspar with a question. "What sort of music do you like to listen to, Feld?"
He changes his gait up and spins in a quick circle, all while maintaining his forward momentum. "Anything that gets the body moving and the tail thumping." Again with a release of the fluffs. He's made a good shield before now, but that hasty motion undid all of the good. Oops. "What about you, peach pie?"
Unavoidable. Two of the fluffs land and cling to the edges of her nose-pad. The tickling sensation immediately starts to creep through her spine and into her muzzle. Nothing to be done about it. "Hehhhh-- Hhhhmm, that sounds relateabuh-- aaaa-ble..." Her body maintains its jog, but her eyes flutter and gaze outwardly while the tickle resonates and multiplies. "Hyeh..." a soft moan, her body craning backwards. "Hyiiih--"
Her maw bares itself wide, "--Chii-iiw!" And a squeaky sneeze thrusts her tail upwards and her body forwards into her awaiting hands, and she quickly brushes away the offending flora. "Music with energy is where it's at. Lyrics are nothing when faced with... huhf... a good beat." She finishes her reply, punctuated by a few light pants of exertion.
His butt wiggles in agreement as he shuffle-dances side to side. His tail now performing its own sort of percussive beat, flicking in varied directions undoubtedly to a song he recently heard and enjoyed. "Good taste! Atmosphere is important, too. I know a few safe venues to shake our tails at, might make for another fun date spot?" he suggests with a hopeful tone.
"Yeah, sounds nice..." Assuming I don't ruin this one, first, she adds to herself. As if on cue, she hears the sound of wheels on dirt from behind her. She does as she was taught to, and shifts to the right to let the biker pass, slowing her pace to an energetic walk. Clatter clatter clatter, whoosh! The bike zips past, bringing with it a gust of wind that catches her own accumulated fluffs. They float down across the front of her face, several landing directly on the tip of her snout.
Her sensitive nose immediately scrunches up and starts to flare. The sensation is stronger this time. She fumbles her jogging pace, the tickle taking precedence over anything not automatic. "Heee~heeeh," a wiggling moan escapes her muzzle, to match the wiggle taking place at the end of it. Her hand slowly comes up to brush away the sinewy foes, "Hiii~hiiihhh~!" Her tail tucks as her hand makes its destination. A flick of her wrist knocks away the evil 'snow', and the intensity of the tickle spikes.
"Hiiiih haah..." An adorably cute and almost pleasured expression adorns Maya's face as she fans her hand, bracing for the oncoming sneeze. "Hiiih!!" Her nose points towards the sky, before, "-CHiieeww" a loud release, giving her some much needed relief from the tingly sensation permeating through not just her snout, but her spine as well. A sniff and a smile hides a nagging feeling in the back of her mind. Five... It'll be okay, May-May. Just get back to jogging. He's looking at you. Say something. "Excuse me! Whew. I'm ready again."
Feeling a little self-conscious, Maya pours her nervous energy into her jogging... and dodging. Left, right, left, right, shift, left, right. With the increase in speed, she finds herself up next to her boyfriend, finally approaching his desired pace. The pair zone out in the park's atmosphere, and conversation dies down.
Huff, huff, huff...
Author's Notes: Aside from the cottonwood-like trees, I spent a lot of time in a park similar to this one. So many twists and turns in a stretch of woods that manage to disguise the other paths despite their proximity. My own first visit there was on a date, and I remember having the biker etiquette explained to me. Writing is such an enjoyable way to connect with our pasts, to share these experiences with others through their raw essences.
As for our poor anxious vixen here, it becomes a bit more clear that what she is counting is her sneezes. But to what end? I'm sure Feldspar is sensing her anxiety, but he is getting mixed signals. Something that he's experienced around her before, but she has yet to open up to him. So he can only guess, and do his best to feel confident that she's choosing to be around him because she is happy.

I am really enjoying this so far! :D Very well written. You paint quite a vivid picture of this park setting, with the cottonwood seeds covering the landscape.
Great characters too! Feldspar seems like such a sweet guy. Poor Maya, trying to keep up with him while the fluffs keep assaulting her nose. xD Her sneezes are adorable, btw!
I wasn't totally clear what she was counting for at first, but now that it's clear that she's counting her sneezes, I'm really intrigued as to why. I look forward to seeing where this is going! Excellent work. Keep it up!

Thank you for the detailed comment!
I'm definitely more of one for wholesome interactions. The world is so stressful and antagonistic these days that I want to see stories with support and positivity between characters when possible.
As for the park and cottonwoods and such, as I said, I tried to channel my personal experiences and capture the things that stand out to me, their essence. I do kind of miss that particular park. It's changed a lot in the last ten years, between minor landslides, urbanization, and general growth and decay. That's part of what makes it fun is recapturing those older memories through writing.

I've read further into the story and I want to comment on each individual part. I am having fun reading what you are doing! I enjoy reading about scenarios with sneezes but to me characters are more important. I like the characters a lot. Feldspar is supportive and Maya has a lot of charm with the reactions to what she is talking about and what she is actively doing.
'Not to mention the extra energy being spent dodging the friendly falling fluffs that would just love to give her pink-hued nostrils a hug.'
This is something I do not see often. It is not just the characters that are charming to me, it is the way you write about the smaller details. This short but fun descriptive way to give some life to the smaller background surroundings make my head visualize what is going on around her.
Something too I notice with this 2nd part is the increasing use of heightened emotional reactive sensations. There is something going on with Maya's sneezes that she is nervous of. Something that is building up just as much as the itchy sensations a sneeze has.

Writing characters is definitely harder the writing the scenarios. It's one thing to imagine the plot, to know where the characters have to travel, but it's another entirely to actually walk that path alongside the characters. To treat them as real people, to let them make their own decisions.
As this piece was written several years ago, I found myself having to learn new things as I wrote it. Adjusting to the characters, understanding better how to create interesting interactions, and more. Jogging isn't the most conversationally conductive activity, so when I managed to escape from the awkward scenario I wrote myself into I made sure to capitalize on the downtime to really bring the pair to life. Something to look forward to.
Ah, but yes, the smaller details! Oh, it's such a pleasure to do! It's one of the biggest reasons I write, but also one of the biggest reasons I struggle. I want to bring all of the details to life, and sometimes it just becomes awkward when every little thing is focused on. Confusing, even. At least in slower moments it can add so much to capture the atmosphere. Finding the right time to emphasize environment details or character details is something I think I'm still working on.
